SEATTLE -- Selection Monday is complete and Washington earned a No. 7 seed in the Lexington Region and will face 10th-seeded Pennsylvania in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The game will be Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m., PT in College Park, Md.
The Dawgs (22-10) return to the Big Dance for the second-straight season and 18th time in school history. They will face the Ivy League Champs in Penn (24-4) in a game played at Maryland. The Terrapins (30-3) are the No. 2 seed in the region and will face 15th-seed Iona (23-11) in the game preceding the Dawgs and Quakers. The winner of the two first round games will then play Monday, March 21, at a time to be announced back on the home floor of Maryland.
The Dawgs are 15-17 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including a best finish of advancing to the Regional Finals in both 1990 and 2001. Last, year the sixth-seed Huskies fell in the first round to Miami (Fla.), 86-80.
Washington was one of five Pac-12 teams selected for the NCAA Tournament this year as co-conference champions Oregon State and Arizona State earned No. 2 seeds, UCLA earned a No. 3 seed and Stanford earned a No. 4. UCLA and Stanford were the two NCAA Tournament teams the Dawgs defeated this season, playing a total of 10 games against teams in the field.
After advancing to the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament and playing three games in three days, the Huskies got some well-deserved rest last week, but returned to practice Monday after learning their opponent.
