Huskies Run-Rule San Diego State, Improve To 17-3

FRESNO, Calif. – After rain canceled the first day of action in the Fresno State Tournament, the No. 8-ranked University of Washington softball team opened the tournament on Saturday (March 12), earning its ninth run-rule decision of the season, beating San Diego State, 8-0 in five innings.
Sophomore RHP Madi Schreyer (6-0) tossed another complete-game gem, throwing her fifth shutout of the season, fanning five while allowing just three hits and no walks.
The top of the Husky lineup was particularly potent in the win as Washington's first five batters combined for seven hits. Sophomore centerfielder Julia DePonte was 2-for-2, recording three RBI while sophomore Taylor Van Zee and senior Kimberlee Souza also tallied a pair of hits. Freshman Morganne Flores led the team with four runs batted in, hitting her first collegiate grand slam in the fifth inning.
Washington continued its trend of taking the game's first lead in the first frame. The Huskies put runners on the corners after Van Zee ripped a one-out double and junior Ali Aguilar singled. Back-to-back singles by Souza and DePonte then gave Washington a 2-0 lead.
Van Zee and Aguilar started the rally again in the third as Van Zee singled and Aguilar drew a walk. After Souza's bunt advanced the runners, DePonte delivered a stand-up double to plate the pair.
Washington used a two-out rally in the fifth to score four more runs and put the game into run-rule territory. DePonte and senior Dani Braun drew back-to-back walks and freshman Tannon Snow singled to load the bases. Flores then drove the 1-1 pitch to deep left-center field for her third home run of the season and first collegiate grand slam.
Washington will play game two of the day against No. 24 Fresno State at 6:30 p.m. PST tonight.
