Hot Bats Carry Huskies Over Weber State In Fresno State Classic
March 13, 2016 | Softball
FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Washington softball team used a balanced attack at the plate, scoring multiple runs in each of the first four innings to cruise past Weber State, 10-3 in six innings. The Wildcats had a drop dead time of 1:30 p.m. which caused the game to end early in the top of the sixth. The Huskies' second game of the day against CSU Bakersfield was canceled in the third inning due to rain.
Washington had 11 different batters tally at least one hit as the Huskies boasted double-digit hits for the 13th time this season. Sophomore Taylor Van Zee and freshman Brittany Werre led the team with two RBI apiece. Sophomore Kelly Burdick went 2-for-2 with a run batted in. The Huskies recorded six doubles in the game by six different batters.
Sophomore RHP Madi Schreyer (7-0) was victorious from the circle, allowing three earned run on 11 hits and two walks while striking out seven through 5.1 innings pitched.
Weber State took the game's first lead in the first inning after reaching on a double, advancing to third on a groundout and coming home off a single up the middle. The lead was short lived, however, as Washington went on to plate 10 runs.
The Huskies used a two-out rally in the bottom of the first to go on top, 2-1. Aguilar ripped a double to right field and then scored off an infield error after sophomore Julia DePonte hit an infield grounder and the first baseman bobbled the throw. In the next at-bat, junior Casey Stangel's double to left field scored DePonte.
Washington used four hits and two errors to score four more runs in the second. After freshman Morganne Flores reached on an error, freshman Tannon Snow drew a walk and sophomore Trysten Melhart's single plated Flores from second. In the next at-bat, sophomore Taylor Van Zee's double knocked home Snow and Melhart. Van Zee then scored off on an error by the third baseman and the Dawgs went on top, 6-1.
Senior Kimberlee Souza led off the third with a double and pinch runner Amirah Milloy came home off Burdick's double in the next at-bat. Burdick then scored off freshman Morganne Flores' single and Washington led 8-1 after three innings of play.
The Huskies used three hits to score two more runs in the fourth. Sophomore Kirstyn Thomas and freshman Rachel Ogasawara came in to pinch hit and responded by ripping back-to-back singles. Freshman pinch hitter Brittany Werre then registered her first collegiate hit, a double to plate the pair and give Washington a 10-1 advantage.
Weber State pushed the game out of run-rule territory in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs off four hits. The Wildcats hit a pair of singles and then scored a run off a double. Two outs later, a squeeze bunt scored another run.
After a three up, three down inning for the Husky bats, Weber State led off the sixth with a single, but with the drop-dead time in place, the game ended with one-out and Washington earned its third win of the Fresno State Classic.
Washington returns home to open Pac-12 play against Oregon next weekend (Sat.-Mon.). Click here for ticket information.
