QUERENCIA, Mexico -- No. 29 Washington finished off a disappointing tournament on Tuesday at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate with a round of 10-over 294. The Dawgs finished tied for 10th at 21-over 873 for the week.
"It was a disappointing week," said head coach Matt Thurmond. "It just proves that bad golf in paradise is still miserable."
Playing against an elite field, the Dawgs finished well out of the lead as No. 11 Georgia took the team title at 18-under, winning by 10 shots. No. 30 South Florida was second at 8-under, followed by No. 34 Baylor at 5-under. Overall, six teams were under par, before a big drop off to seventh place No. 3 Florida State who was 16-over.
The Huskies just could not put together any low rounds all week, although Corey Pereira and Jonathan Sanders were at least able to stay around par.
"Corey and Jonathan played decent, but it was rough for the other three guys," said Thurmond.
Pereira finished the week as the Dawgs low player at 1-over 214 to tie for 14th. He finished off the tournament with a round of 1-over 72 that included three birdies and four bogeys.
Sanders also had a top-20 finish, ending the week at 2-over 215 and tied for 18th. He birdied his opening hole, the par-3 11th, but then did not make another birdie to go with two bogeys for his final round.
The other scores kept on Tuesday were 4-over 75's shot by both Frank Garber and Carl Yuan. Garber made two birdies, but four bogeys and a double, while Yuan had just one birdie and five bogeys. Both players finished the week at 11-over and tied for 58th.
Finally, Kevin Kwon shot a 5-over 76 for his final round, including two double-bogeys. He finished 10-over for the week and tied for 54th.
"The course can really mess with your head and we struggled to ever settle in out there," said Thurmond. "We didn't read the greens well and short games showed that a lot."
The Dawgs will next compete at the Bandon Dunes Collegiate, which begins Sunday, March 6. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was the site of Sanders' first collegiate win back in 2014.
