February 08, 2016 | Women's Tennis
WACO, Texas – The No. 46 Washington women's tennis team pulled off an upset over No. 15 Baylor today, in a 4-3 victory at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
The victory moved the Huskies up to 7-1 on the season, and gave them their second win over a ranked opponent.
“Today was a total team victory and a step in the right direction for our team,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “This is a special group that are all coming together.”
The Dawgs claimed the doubles point to begin the match with victories on courts one and two. Miki Kobayashi and Nour Abbes defeated Blair Shankle and Theresa Van Zyl 6-3 on court one, as Tami Grende and Stacey Fung beat Rhiann Newborn and Karina Traxler 6-4 on court two. The third match did not finish.
“We came out with a lot of energy and were aggressive in the doubles,” said Stephenson. “That really set the tone for us, our girls stepped up and played tough under pressure and raised their level when it counted.”
The Bears tied the match back up to begin singles as Blair Shankle defeated Elianne Douglas-Miron on court four 6-3, 6-1. The match remained tied at two as Nour Abbes defeated Kiah Generette 6-3, 6-4 and Newborn beat Grende 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
No. 65 Stacey Fung battled back after dropping the first set 6-4 to defeat Van Zyl 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 before Kenadi Hance clinched the victory for the Huskies with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Gabriela Ferreira on court five. Sophia Bott fell to Traxler on court six to make the final score a 4-3 Washington win.
“Baylor is a very well coached team and I have a lot of respect for their program,” said Stephenson. “We still have a lot of room for improvement and we are looking forward to getting back to practice before our home matches next weekend.”
This is the highest ranked opponent Washington has defeated since a 4-3 victory over No. 14 Florida State on January 30th during the 2011 season.
The Huskies will play their first home match since January 10th next weekend as they will host San Diego State and St. Mary's at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
