Huskies Put Up Big Performance At Home In 7-0 Win
February 13, 2016 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 34 Washington Huskies turned in a dominating performance today against San Diego State, in a 7-0 victory to move to 8-1 on the season.
“I could not be more proud of the team for the way they handled the match today,” said head coach Robin Stephenson.
For the eighth time this season the Huskies grabbed the doubles point to begin the match, but not without a battle. On court three, Sophia Bott and Kenadi Hance were down 0-2 to start to Kennedy Davis and Paola Diaz, before winning six straight points to win 6-2. Elianne Douglas-Miron and Miki Kobayashi clinched the doubles for Washington on court two, with a 6-3 victory over Jana Buth and Tami Nguyen. The third match on court one did not finish.
“We had to switch up the doubles teams and bump everyone up in singles right before the match started and they responded the right way and really proved what this team is all about,” said Stephenson. “They played with a great amount of energy and played for each other out there today.”
In singles, Grende made her first appearance on court two this season, defeating Davis 6-2, 6-1 to give the Dawgs a 2-0 lead. The Huskies were able to clinch the victory over the Aztecs as both Stacey Fung and Douglas-Miron won almost simultaneously. On court one, Fung defeated Tami Nguyen 6-1, 6-3 and Douglas-Miron downed Buth 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Hance advanced to 8-0 on the season, as she was victorious over Diaz on court four 6-3, 6-2. After beginning her match down 4-0, Kobayashi battled back to win the first set 7-5 against Taylor Lederman, before turning that momentum into a 6-2 second set. Bott was last to finish up, as she battled in a tough second set against Isabelle Hoorn after winning the first 6-1. Tied 6-6, the second set went to a back-and-forth tie-breaker, with Bott coming out on top 7-5.
“SDSU is a good team and we had to play some really good tennis to get the win,” said Stephenson. “It was nice to be back on our home courts and playing in front of our home crowd. We are looking forward to getting back out there Sunday.”
The Huskies will be back in action this Sunday as they will take on No. 45 Saint Mary's for the second time this season. The match will begin at 11 a.m. in the Nordstrom Tennis Center with free admission and pizza served after the doubles matches.
