February 14, 2016 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 34 Washington Huskies picked up their third win over a ranked opponent this season today, with a 6-1 victory over No. 45 Saint Mary's at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies grabbed the early 1-0 lead in doubles with quick victories on courts two and three. Sophia Bott and Elianne Douglas-Miron were first to finish with a 6-1 victory over Aniek Van Rossum and Kareena Manji on court three. Shortly afterwards, Stacey Fung and Tami Grende turned in a strong 6-0 performance over Clementine Clement and Parminder Kaur, with the match on court one not finishing.
“I thought we played some of our best doubles of the season today,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “We are playing with a lot of purpose and executing the type of tennis we want to play and competing with the right amount of intensity.”
Grende and Bott were first to finish in singles, each turning in dominating performances. On court three, Grende defeated Van Rossum 6-0, 6-1, while Bott blanked Kareena Manji 6-0, 6-0. Captain Douglas-Miron won the match clinching point for the Dawgs on court four, with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Emma Critser.
“We are improving with each match and we are headed in the right direction leading up to our last few out of conference matches,” said Stephenson.
After a day off on Friday, Nour Abbes returned to court one today to face the Gaels' Jana McCord. Abbes came out on top of a tough first set 7-5, before turning in a big 6-2 second set to put the Huskies up 5-0. The final two singles matches went to a tie-breaker on courts two and five, with the Huskies and Gaels each taking one. Kenadi Hance remained undefeated this season, defeating Clement 6-4, 4-6, (10-8) while Fung fell to Jamie Pawid in a close 7-5, 1-6, (10-4) match.
“I am extremely pleased with this weekend overall and the way the team has come together,” said Stephenson.
The Huskies will be back on the road next weekend, as they will play three matches in three days beginning with No. 15 Oklahoma State on Saturday. You can keep up to date with the team on their website at GoHuskies.com, or on our social media pages on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
