CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Washington softball team earned a dominant 17-1, five-inning win over San Jose State on the second day of competition at the Mary Nutter Classic Saturday afternoon (Feb. 27) in Cathedral City, Calif. It was the Huskies' fifth run-rule decision of the season.
Eight different Husky batters tallied at least one base knock as Washington boasted double-digit hits for the seventh time this year. Senior Courtney Gano went 3-for-4, knocking out her first home run of the season and tallying three RBI. Freshman Krystal Aubert crushed a grand slam, the second of her career, in the fifth inning and led the team with four RBI. Junior Ali Aguilar and sophomore Taylor Van Zee each posted two hits apiece. Aguilar hit her fifth homer of the season.
Freshman RHP Taran Alvelo (5-2) earned the win, striking out five while allowing just two hits and three walks.
The Huskies got to work early, scoring a run in the first and third, before unleashing on 15 runs in the final two frames. Van Zee scored both of the runs early. In the first, the second baseman drew a one-out walk before Aguilar singled to put a pair on for Gano whose RBI single gave Washington a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies then scored another in the third off sophomore Julia DePonte's sac-fly which plated Van Zee who led off the inning with a double.
San Jose State cut into Washington's lead with a run in the bottom of the third, drawing a one-out walk and advancing to second off a throwing error. In the next at-bat, an RBI double scored the Spartans' first and only run of the game.
Washington plated seven runs off six hits and an error in the fourth inning. Freshman Morganne Flores started the rally, drawing a one-out walk and senior Dani Braun singled. Sophomore Kelly Burdick then reached on an infield error, scoring pinch runner Amirah Milloy. After Van Zee singled home Braun, Aguilar and Gano unloaded on back-to-back homers. The inning continued with DePonte's single in the next at-bat and she advanced to third off a pair of wild pitches. After a walk put runners on the corners, freshman Tannon Snow delivered an RBI single. The Huskies drew back-to-back walks to plate its seventh run of the inning.
The Dawgs tacked on eight more runs in the fifth off three hits and five walks. Gano's RBI double scored Aguilar who drew a one-out walk. Snow then drew a bases loaded walk to score a run and Flores recorded an RBI single. After another bases loaded walk, Aubert bombed out the 2-0 pitch in the next at-bat, driving a grand slam over the fence in left to give the Huskies a 17-1 lead.
Washington is back in action tomorrow (Feb. 28) for the final day of the Mary Nutter Classic. The Huskies play Nebraska at 9 a.m. before facing No. 2 Michigan at 11:30 a.m. PST.
