Huskies Fall In Battle With No. 31 Wichita State
February 21, 2016 | Women's Tennis
STILLWATER, OK – The No. 33 Washington women's tennis team fell to No. 31 Wichita State today in a close 4-2 match at the Greenwood Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma State.
“Today was a battle and these are the types of matches you play for,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “We were unfortunately on the losing end of this one today.”
Washington was unable to grab the doubles point today, with Stacey Fung and Tami Grende falling 6-3 on court two, and Sophia Bott and Elianne Douglas-Miron losing 6-4 on court three. On court one Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi did not finish their match.
“We came out a little bit slow in our doubles today and got behind early,” said Stephenson. “But the girls came out and did a great job competing on every court in singles and gave us a chance to win this match.”
The Huskies were able to make up some ground in single however, with Abbes defeating Gabriela Porubin 7-5, 6-1 on court one after Kenadi Hance fell 6-0, 6-1 on court five. On court three, Grende tied it up for the Dawgs at 2-2 with a big 6-3, 6-3 win over Julia Schiller.
“We were serving for the match at a spot and had a match point on another court around the same time but credit to Wichita State for hanging around and fighting back on those courts,” said Stephenson.
After coming back to win the second set to force a third, Douglas-Miron fell in a close 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 match on court four against Giulia Guidetti. Wichita State clinched the fourth point on court six, as Abby Stevens defeated Bott in a close 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 match. Fung's match on court two went unfinished.
“We are a young team and the girls are learning a ton from these matches,” said Stephenson. “We just need to continue to learn to be disciplined under pressure and finish. It's great to have a weekend like this leading into Pac-12 play so we are prepared for the level of competition we will be facing week in and week out.”
The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow as they will face No. 10 Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas at noon. To keep up to date with all things Washington tennis check out our team page at GoHuskies.com, and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
