SEATTLE – While most of the Husky track and field team was resting up from Saturday's intense Husky Classic, a handful of Huskies made the most of another chance to compete in today's UW Indoor Open, which wrapped up three days of action in the Dempsey. Washington got big performances from Eleanor Fulton in the 800-meters, and Frank Catelli and Jack Lembcke in the shot put to cap off the impressive weekend.
Fulton, who had run a strong mile yesterday but missed out on a PR, came back and had a big PR in the 800-meters, one of the best in school history in fact. Fulton's previous PR outdoors was in the 2:08 range, but she blew past that with a victory in 2:06.53, becoming just the third Husky to break 2:07 indoors. She moves to No. 2 all-time, behind only senior teammate Baylee Mires.
In the shot put, Catelli matched his indoor PR to the centimeter, throwing 18.25 meters, or 59-10 ½ inches to win the event. Lembcke joined Catelli on the Husky top-10 list for the first time as he had a best toss of 56-feet, 8-inches, putting the South Dakota native No. 10 at UW.
Fulton and Catelli both moved into the top-40 nationally with those marks, Fulton to 31st and Catelli to 35th.
Senior Naivasha Sophusson Smith earned herself another career-best in the 60m hurdles today, going 8.80 seconds to finish third overall. Freshman Darhian Mills also had a season-best 9.15. Also in the sprints, Andrew Prentice finished up a strong weekend with a third-place 400-meters finish in 48.72,
The women's pole vault wrapped up the evening. Sophomore Kaitlin Zinsli cleared a season-best 12-7 ½ and had a near-miss at 13-1 ½. But a future Husky stole the show late, as high school senior Abby Weiler, who signed with UW for the fall of 2016, jumped a career-high 13-7 ¼ to win the event. Current Dawgs Candace Ho and Jessica Goodkin each had season-best 12-1 ½ makes. On the men's side, Lev Marcus was second with a season-best make of 17-1 ¾, while Chris Williams cleared 16-8 and freshman Chase Smith also made 16-8, a season-best.
Senior Alyx Toeaina was sixth in the women's shot put with a season-best 42-7 ½. Senior Bev Coleman had a season-best in the weight of 53-2 ¾, and Toeaina had a PR in that event as well, throwing 52-9 ¼ to jump up to the No. 5 spot on the Husky top-10 list.
The Dempsey season will wrap up in two weeks with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference championship meet on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27.
