SEATTLE – Two of the top 5,000-meter times in Husky history were posted tonight at the Husky Classic, one by a fifth-year senior, and the other by a freshman in her college track debut. The packed weekend of track in the Dempsey kicked off this evening, with Aaron Nelson finishing less than a second off his own school record in the men's 5k, and then Charlotte Prouse posting the No. 5 time in school history in the top heat of the women's 5k.
The Husky Classic resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and the top running sections in the mile, 400m, 800m, and 3,000m are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
Nelson, an NCAA Indoor qualifier in the 5,000-meters last year, turned in a great effort tonight as he attempts to book a return trip to nationals. In one of the most talented fields that will be run in the NCAA this season, Nelson moved near the front with five laps left, and took the lead with three laps to go. He gave up a few spots in the final sprint, finishing ninth overall, but just two seconds out of fourth-place, with a time of 13:48.41. That was just 0.99 seconds off his own school record of 13:47.42 set a year ago. Depending on how other meets around the country shake out, that time should put him in the top-20, with 16 athletes reaching NCAAs.
Prouse, who helped the women's cross country squad to a 10th-place finish at nationals in the fall, dove right into the fastpaced 5k and held her own, finishing 13th among collegiate runners with a time of 16:15.91, jumping right up to the No. 5 spot in the Husky top-10 list.
The 200-meter dashes took place tonight as well. Junior Andrew Brown was third overall on the men's side in a time of 21.80, just .02 off his PR. Travis Marshall was 10th in 22.19, while freshmen Ryan Croson was 13th in 22.26 and Jordan Lucas was 14th in 22.33, season-bests for all.
In the men's weight throw, sophomore Carey Campbell finished 19th with a best of 53-9 ¾, and senior Kyle White had a PR of 52-10 ¾ to finish 21st.
The first flights out of three in the pole vault were held today, with the second and third flights scheduled for Saturday. Freshman Leah Bertucelli, competing unattached, cleared a season-best 12-1 ½ to take fourth in the flight.
