Thirteen New Huskies Join In Early Period
December 16, 2016 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – During the fall singing period, the Husky track and field program put together the first part of a major 2017-18 freshman class, with thirteen new Dawgs signing their Letters of Intent in November. Washington can add more commitments to the class in the spring period, which starts in April.
Head Coach Greg Metcalf and his assistants signed six men and seven women including five Washington state natives, three Arizona products, two athletes from California, one from Montana, and two Canadian athletes.
There are two throwers in the mix, but the rest of the commits are middle or long distance runners, as UW reloads in those events. Washington middle and long distance runners scored more points combined at last year's Pac-12 Track & Field Championships than any other conference school.
"The success of our distance runners during the 2015-16 cross country and track seasons really paved the way for this recruiting class which is one of our deepest ever on the distance side," said Head Coach Greg Metcalf. "It really fired them up and they wanted to be a part of what Washington stood for academically and athletically. Then Coach Schutz has brought on two very talented throwers that fill a key area of need for us in the discus. But this distance group we think has amazing talent at 800-meters all the way up to the 5k, steeplechase, and 10k. They are hard-nosed, motivated high achievers in their high schools and will thrive in our team environment."
The women's group is comprised of mid-distance runners Erin Ripple of Seattle and Erica Schroeder from Santa Barbara, Calif. plus two distance runners from Arizona, Allie Schadler and Sarah Carter, and Ontario, Canada product Shona McCulloch. Washington natives Hannah Waskom (Snoqualmie) and Camila David-Smith (Issaquah) round out the deep and talented distance group.
On the men's side, Jonah Wilson of Fresno, Calif. and Elijah Mason of Phoenix, Ariz., both nationally ranked in the discus, will bolster the Husky throws group next year. Washington will also add Mountlake Terrace, Wash. native Devan Kirk to its mid-distance group. Long distance recruits include Chase Equall from Bozeman, Mont., Thomas Nobbs from Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle native Tibebu Proctor.
Ripple and Schroeder both own 800-meter state titles in Washington and California, respectively. Ripple of Holy Names Academy has seven top-five state track finishes including the 2014 and 2015 800m 3A state titles and has run 2:10 all three years of her prep career. Schroeder won the 2015 California 800m state title and has an impressive 2:07.08 PR which ranked seventh nationally in 2015, and a 4:51 mile best.
Schadler wrapped up her senior cross country season with a top-10 finish at the Nike Cross Nationals meet, cementing herself as one of the top seniors in the country. She finished seventh overall, after winning her fourth consecutive Arizona D-III state cross country title. She has shown great range on the track, with a 10:16 PR at 3,200-meters, a 4:45 1,600m best, and a 2:10 800m PR. Carter also owns an Arizona state cross country title, as she won the 2015 Division-I championship. As just a sophomore, Carter made the state track meet in the 800m, 1,600m, and 3,200-meters plus the 4x800m relay.
McCulloch brings an impressive list of achievements to Seattle to join fellow Ontario product and current sophomore Charlotte Prouse. McCulloch ran for Canada at the 2016 World U20 Championships and finished 11th overall in the 3,000-meters in 9:16.93 after winning the Canadian junior title at that distance. She has a sub-10-minute PR at 2-miles, going 9:59.87 that she set in a win at the Brooks PR Invite in June in Seattle. McCulloch also ran at the 2016 New Balance Nationals and took fourth in the mile at 4:46.18 and third in the 5k at 16:31.22.
Waskom, from Mt. Si High School, is a two-time top-five finisher at the 4A state cross country meet, taking second as a junior and fourth this fall as a senior, and also was third in the 3,200-meters last spring on the track. Waskom was the Kingco 4A cross country champ this fall, while future teammate Camila David-Smith of Interlake High School won the 3A league title and then went on to finish third at the Washington 3A state meet.
Mason ranked 24th nationally in the discus last season while Wilson ranked 37th, and the two were ninth and 14th among juniors. Mason, from Desert Vista High in Phoenix, had a big win at the 2016 Arcadia Invite, throwing his PR of 192-3 and going on to win the Arizona D-I state title for a second straight season. Wilson, from Clovis High, was sixth in the discus at the 2016 California State Championships, and also made the finals in the shot put. He owns a best of 188-4 in the discus and 59-8 in the shot.
Kirk captured the 3A state title at 800-meters last season and ran a PR of 1:51.98. He also took second at the prestigious Brooks PR Invite in 1:52.45, and was state runner-up as a sophomore in 2015.
Equall is the reigning Montana state cross country champion. He then finished second at the Nike Cross Northwest Regional meet and followed that up with a 26th-place finish at the 2016 Nike Cross National Championships.
Nobbs from Point Grey High School in Vancouver, B.C., was named the Male Youth Cross Country Runner of the Year in 2015 by BC Athletics. He won the 3k in the Dempsey at the 2016 UW High School Invite, in a meet record 8:32.91 and has extensive steeplechase experience, winning the 2016 Canadian Youth Championship in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 5:54.41, over 12 seconds faster than second-place, while also winning the open 3,000-meters in 8:30.83.
Last but not least, Proctor earned All-America honors this past week when he finished seventh at the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships in San Diego, after finishing as the runner-up in the West Region. Proctor attends the Northwest School which produced Husky All-American Maddie Meyers, and he cruised to his second-straight 1A state cross country title this fall, winning by 28 seconds. Proctor and Nobbs also went 1-2 at Washington's Sundodger Invite High School Varsity race this September.
2016 Fall Commitments with quotes from Head Coach Greg Metcalf, and assistant coaches Anita Campbell and Jason Schutz.
Sarah Carter – Distance – Phoenix, Ariz. (Xavier College Prep)
Coach Campbell: "From the very beginning, Sarah has told us how excited she would be for the opportunity to be a part of what our women's program is doing right now. She showed her potential early this fall and we believe she has a bright future ahead of her as she continues to develop her understanding of training and racing at the next level. She is eager to learn and contribute and will continue to take big strides forward as she trains and competes with our group in the coming years. Sarah is committed to doing this at the highest level and we are excited to watch her reach her potential as a Husky."
Camila David-Smith – Distance – Issaquah, Wash. (Interlake)
Coach Campbell: "Camila had a fantastic senior XC season and improved every week throughout the fall to finish her season with a KingCo Championship win and a third-place finish in a competitive 3A State Championship race. She is eager to be around collegiate teammates that have similar goals and ambitions as athletes and students. She is relatively new to the sport and has only been racing for a couple of years, but has proven that she is a quick learner and is excited to take the step up to the DI level of competition. As she continues to build her running resume and expand on her racing experiences she will continue to develop into a very confident and capable cross country and track runner at this level. We're very excited that she decided to stay in Washington and take advantage of every opportunity this athletic department, school and city can provide her."
Chase Equall – Distance – Bozeman, Mont. (Bozeman)
Coach Metcalf: "Chase is one of the best distance runners in the Northwest who recently won his first Montana state championship. He has continued to get better every year and brings great range and competitiveness to our program. In our conversations with Chase, it was clear that he was looking for the perfect combination of World Class Academics and Athletics. We believe we added a great future Husky to our team. He should play an integral role in the success of our men's cross country team as well as adding another weapon to our arsenal of distance runners. We are excited to see where he goes from here."
Devan Kirk - Mid-Distance - Mountlake Terrace, Wash. (Shorewood)
Coach Metcalf: "Devan is coming off a fantastic junior year where he ran one of the fastest times in Washington State history at 800m. After watching him race last spring and getting to know him more in the recruiting process it became more and more evident that we had to have him at Washington. We believe that we have added one of the very best middle distance athletes in the country to our team. He is coachable, versatile, a great teammate, and an incredibly hard-working young man. The University of Washington had everything that Devan expressed that he wanted in his college choice and he has everything we look for in the student-athletes we want in our program."
Elijah Mason - Throws - Phoenix, Ariz. - (Desert Vista)
Coach Schutz: "I am very excited to welcome Elijah to our Husky Family. He is one of the top young discus throwers in the country and has expressed from the first day that attending UW has always been a dream of his. His talent and work ethic, combined with his strong desire to be a Husky, make Elijah someone that will have an immediate impact on our program and we are thrilled about his choice to be a Dawg!
Shona McCulloch – Distance – Nepean, Ontario (Longfields Davidson Heights)
Coach Campbell: "Shona has proven herself to be one of the very best junior athletes in the world after finishing 11th in the 3000m at the 2016 World Junior Championships. She has had tastes of competition at the highest level and has dreams and ambitions of competing with the best of the best. One thing that we noticed early on is Shona's commitment to working hard and learning from every experience along the way. She has great range from 800m through cross country and has all the tools she needs to race well at the NCAA level. One thing I truly appreciate about the way Shona races, is that she is a fighter. She gives it everything she has. We believe that with continued purposeful training and adding in a great group of women to train with, she is capable of achieving big things in the coming years."
Thomas Nobbs – Distance – Vancouver, B.C. (Point Grey)
Coach Metcalf: "Thomas is a distance runner full of potential. He is a great student of the sport and has a tremendous running IQ. He was drawn to Washington because of the great success of our distance runners last year. He stood along the fence line last year and watched the Pac 12 Championships as a high school junior, and in his own words, said "I want to be a part of something great like that." He is another very versatile distance runner, who will impact our program in the fall and on the track. He is one of the very best junior steeplechasers in North America and has the potential to compete immediately in the Pac-12."
Tibebu Proctor – Distance – Seattle, Wash. (Northwest School)
Coach Metcalf: "Tibs was one of the young men in the State of Washington that we labelled "Must Haves." He is a wonderful young man with a great story. He is an incredibly warm and likable young man and the moment you meet him you can't help but really like him. He is coachable, talented, and filled with the desire to be great. He has big goals both on and off the track and he believed that he can accomplish all those things at Washington. He has the ability to impact our program the moment he steps onto our campus. He will impact our program in every season. He has a bright, bright future and we are fired up that he will be doing it close to home at the UW."
Erin Ripple – Mid-Distance – Seattle, Wash. (Holy Names Academy)
Coach Campbell: "Erin is one of the best middle distance runners to come out of the state of Washington. She is a very talented and dedicated young woman that has been a consistent force in the state her entire high school career. She has missed some time with injury over the course of her high school career, but has shown she is determined to do this at a high level and learn from each and every experience along the way. She is a committed and driven athlete that has shown very nice consistency on the track over the past four years and we're excited to see her develop at the next level and become a strong contributor to our team."
Allie Schadler – Distance – Tubac, Ariz. (Rio Rico)
Coach Campbell: "Allie has proven to be one of the best distance runners to ever come out of Arizona both on the track and cross country course. Allie has already displayed great range from the middle distances through cross country. Like some of the best athletes we've had on the women's side, Allie has shown great speed and strength as a high schooler and we think that she is going to be able to compete in a wide range of events at a very high level as her career unfolds at the collegiate level. We've only seen a glimpse of what Allie is capable of accomplishing and are excited for her to join our group of women as they continue to build momentum on the track and cross country course in the coming years. We love the fiery competitiveness that we've seen from her in the final stretch of close races and know that she is in this to be the very best she is capable of. Her drive and commitment to excel both as an athlete and a student make her a great fit for our program and team."
Erica Schroeder – Mid-Distance – Santa Barbara, Calif. (San Marcos)
Coach Campbell: "Erica has been one of California's top 800m runners for the past two years, winning the CIF state meet her sophomore year in 2:07 and has consistently run between 2:07-2:09. Erica is still early in her development as a runner, but has shown fantastic potential and a strong desire to be one of the very best. With an already great 2016 cross country season under her belt, she is setting herself up for another jump in improvement this coming track season. We could tell early on that Erica is a tenacious competitor and extremely dedicated to her craft. She has a mature head on her shoulders and we're excited to see her take this next leap forward at UW."
Hannah Waskom – Distance – Snoqualmie, Wash. (Mt. Si)
Coach Campbell: "Hannah is a young woman from the state of Washington that we had to have on our team. She is born and raised a Husky fan as her father and two uncles were football players at UW and were recently inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame. Hannah is still developing as a distance runner, but has shown great potential early on and we think her future is very bright. We can already tell that Hannah brings a great work ethic to everything she does and will be a great contributor to our team."
Jonah Wilson – Throws – Fresno, Calif. (Clovis)
Coach Schutz: "We are extremely excited about the addition of Jonah during the early signing period. Jonah's father, Todd, is one of UW's all-time greatest throwers and Jonah has developed into one of the top young discus throwers in the United States in his own right. Jonah is an outstanding young man and student, as well as a highly competitive thrower that I believe will make a big impact for us in the years to come."
