Browning A Finalist For Walter Camp and Manning Awards
November 30, 2016 | Football
A day after being named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year, Washington sophomore quarterback Jake Browning was named a finalist for the Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year Award and the Manning Award.
Browning was one of five – three quarterbacks and two defensive players – that comprise the list of five finalists for the Walter Camp Award. Joining Browning are quarterbacks Lamar Jackson (Louisville) and Deshaun Watson (Clemson) along with defensive lineman Jonathan Allen (Alabama) and linebacker/return specialist Jabrill Peppers (Michigan).
The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, announced 10 finalists for this year's award and joining Browning are J.T. Barrett (Ohio State), Sam Darnold (USC), Luke Falk (Washington State), Jalen Hurts (Alabama), Jackson, Patrick Mahomes II (Texas Tech), Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), Zach Terrell (Clemson) and Watson.
Browning has guided the Huskies' offense to a record-setting year in which they lead the Pac-12 in points per game (44.8) and are on pace to shatter the all-time UW scoring record. He is just the third Pac-12 player to throw 40 touchdowns in a single season.
Browning has thrown for 3,162 yards (214-of-329 attempts) and been intercepted just seven times in 12 starts for the 11-1 Huskies. He enters the Pac-12 title game fourth in the nation in passing TDs, third in passing efficiency (181.64) and sixth in yards per attempt.
The Folsom, Calif., native was the first Husky to earn Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year honors since Marques Tuiasosopo (2000) and is the fifth overall (Mario Bailey, 1991; Greg Lewis, 1990; Steve Pelluer, 1983) in school history.
The 2016 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, who is voted on by the 129 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced on Thursday, December 8 during the 3 p.m. (PT) edition of ESPN SportsCenter. The winner will receive his trophy at the Foundation's 50th annual national awards banquet on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven, Conn.
The winner of the Manning Award will be announced after the bowls in January and will be honored at a ceremony in New Orleans. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that takes the candidates' bowl performances into consideration in its balloting.
