Huskies Sweep Final Player Of The Week Honors
November 28, 2016 | Volleyball
SAN FRANCISCO โ After clinching the Pac-12 title with two big wins over ranked opponents last week, the Huskies were rewarded with a clean sweep of the three Pac-12 weekly honors, as Courtney Schwan won Offensive Player of the Week, Crissy Jones won Defensive, and Avie Niece took Freshman of the Week honors. It's the first time UW has won all three in the same week since the awards expanded in 2011.
ย
Heading into the week tied with UCLA and one game ahead of Stanford in the conference race, the Huskies came out on top with a 3-1 victory over the eighth-ranked Bruins last Wednesday, which clinched at least a share of the Pac-12, and then UW secured the title outright with a 3-0 win over 25th-ranked Washington State in Pullman on Saturday. Washington earned its third conference title in the past four years, finishing with a 16-4 conference record.
ย
Schwan led the offense with 5.29 kills per set for the week, hitting .387, and enjoyed a career night in the win over UCLA, as she had 27 kills on a .440 attack percentage. The 27 kills tied for fifth-most by a Husky in a single match since 2008, and tied for third-most by any Pac-12 player this season. She followed that up with 10 kills against the Cougars. Schwan also had nine digs in each match.
ย
Jones was an all-around factor last week as she averaged 2.71 kills per set, hitting .241, but she also shared the team lead with 24 total digs, including 19 in the win over the Bruins. Jones also had five blocks against UCLA and four more against WSU for an average of 1.29 per set. Her defensive efforts helped hold the Bruins to just .125 on offense, and WSU was limited to a .174 mark.
ย
Niece won her first career Pac-12 honor, as she hit .625 for the week with 10 kills and no errors, six of the kills coming against the Bruins. She also had a team-leading seven block assists against UCLA and added four more blocks at WSU.
ย
It's the second Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honor this season for Schwan. Jones previously won Offensive POTW this year (Sept. 12) but this is her first ever Defensive POTW. Niece is the third Husky to win Freshman of the Week this season, joining Kara Bajema (Sept. 12) and Shayne McPherson (Oct. 10).
This is the first time since Oct. 7, 2013, that one school won all three awards in the same week, as USC took all three that week.
