Dawgs Seeded 8th In 15th Straight NCAA Tourney
November 27, 2016 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – The Pac-12 Champion Huskies will be home in Alaska Airlines Arena for the opening rounds of the NCAA Volleyball Championships, as Washington was awarded the No. 8 overall seed during the Selection Show on ESPNU tonight. The Huskies will begin their 15th-straight NCAA tournament appearance on Friday night against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7:30 p.m.
Should the Huskies advance through the first round, they would remain home for the second round on Saturday night and face the winner of Friday's match between Kentucky and Colorado State.
All-session tickets are on sale now at GoHuskies.com and single game session tickets will go on sale on Thursday.
The Huskies finished the regular season at 26-4 and went 16-4 in Pac-12 play to win the conference title for the third time in the past four years. They won their final seven matches leading into NCAAs and Head Coach Keegan Cook likes how the team has improved in the month of November.
"I'm thrilled with the last few weeks that we've had," says Cook. "We're playing our best volleyball at a time when we need to play our best volleyball. Can't be anything other than elated to be part of this tournament and to be hosting this first weekend."
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the Southland Conference for the second straight season and will be making its second NCAA tourney appearance in a row. Kentucky tied for third in the SEC at 15-3 in conference and went 22-7 overall. Colorado State is one of just seven teams with a longer NCAA tourney streak than the Huskies, as this is 22 in a row for the Rams, who finished second in the Mountain West Conference with a 21-8 overall record, 15-3 in league play.
Defending NCAA Champion Nebraska, which defeated the Huskies in the Elite Eight last season, was given the No. 1 overall seed, followed by No. 2 Minnesota, No. 3 Wisconsin, No. 4 Texas, No. 5 Kansas, No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 North Carolina, then the Huskies to round out the top eight. For the first time, Regional sites were not predetermined, so the highest seed in each region after the first weekend will continue to host round of 16 and quarterfinal matches. The Final Four will be Dec. 15 and 17 in Columbus, Ohio.
