November 17, 2016 | Women's Golf
SEATTLE, Wash. – The reigning National Championship Washington women's golf program will continue to get stronger as head coach Mary Lou Mulflur has announced the signing of three to national letters of intent for the 2017-18 season. Rino Sasaki (Japan), Wenyan Ma (China) and Michelle Lee (Hong Kong) will all join the Huskies on Montlake next year.
"We are very excited to have Rino, Michelle and Wenyan joining us next fall," said Mulflur. "All three bring different things to our team but the one thing they have in common is a huge desire to succeed on the golf course and in the classroom. This group should continue to keep Washington in the upper echelon of women's college golf."
Sasaki has spent the last two years at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where she excelled, earning an amateur spot at the 2016 Symetra Tour's Guardian Retirement Championship. She came to the IMG Academy as a 15-year-old from Mexico after being raised in Japan and went on to finish second at the IMG Junior World Match Play Championship. She also tied for eighth at the AJGA Golf Performance Center Junior Championship in 2016.
"Rino is the most experienced of the three and brings a level of success from a national and international standpoint," said Mulflur. "We're very excited to have her join our program."
Ma, originally from Jiangsu, China, has spent time on the Future Collegians World Tour recording top five finishes at two events during the 2014-15 season. Most recently she was invited to compete at the 2016 GolfWeek International Junior Invitational.
"Wenyan is incredibly talented and is so hungry to get better," added Mulflur. "The sky is the limit for her and we're eager to have her on campus to help her to continue to grow and get better."
Lee joins the Huskies from Hong Kong and brings a wealth of international experience with her. She finished fifth in the 2016 Hong Kong Junior Close Championship and tied for 5th in the 10th Am-Bank-Sport Excel International Junior Golf Championship in 2015. Additionally, she won the Maiden Macau Title in 2013 and finished tied for 18th at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship in 2015.
"Michelle will be successful in our culture and is going to surprise some folks," said Mulflur. "She will fit in to our program seamlessly and we're excited to have her here in Seattle."
