SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Four Huskies were named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Team Tuesday afternoon, as announced by the conference. Additionally, Handwalla Bwana was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Along with his Freshman of the Year honors, Bwana found himself on the All-Conference Team. He is joined by Justin Schmidt, Auden Schilder, Henry Wingo and Kyle Coffee.
"While I'm proud of our guys who received these awards, they are always the result of a successful team and great teammates," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "I've said countless times that this is deepest team we have ever had, as such I feel like any one of twelve guys could have been honored."
Bwana becomes the fourth recipient of the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year award in program history and first since Cristian Roldan in 2013. The other Huskies to win the award were Ely Allen (2004) and C.J. Klaas (2001).
In his first season wearing the Purple and Gold, Bwana has been a consistent play-maker. Born and raised in Kenya until he was 12, the freshman forward played in 18 matches, starting in 8; totaling for 1,051 minutes. He had four total goals on the season, one of which helped the team in their 4-0 shutout at UCLA. He finished second in the conference for assists (7) and assists per game (.39).
"Handwalla is in the midst of a special first season," said head coach Jamie Clark. "He scored a few highlight reel goals and has been a constant menace to opposing defenses. The future is bright with he and our other first year attacking players like Jaret Townsend and Elijah Rice."
Redshirt senior defender, Justin Schmidt, was named on the All-Pac-12 First Team. Redshirt junior goalkeeper, Auden Schilder, junior midfielder, Henry Wingo, and Bwana were named All-Pac-12 Second Team honorees. Earning honorable mention was junior forward, Kyle Coffee.
"I am delighted for our All-Conference selections, but in particular Justin Schmidt," said Clark. "When a guy comes back for a fifth year, they really have committed to giving back to the team and program; so when they get recognized in return - it's the icing on the cake."
Although Schmidt is listed as a defender on the roster, he has played a crucial role on both sides of the ball this season. His defensive work helped lead the team to five shutouts and held opponents to an average of .87 goals allowed per game. He also netted two balls, one of which was the golden goal at Stanford. The win for the Huskies marked the Cardinal's first loss at home since 2014. The game winning header earned him National Soccer News' Team of the Week honors. The New Mexico native also assisted with two goals during the season.
In his first season as the team's starting goalkeeper, Schilder has turned heads. He has recorded five shutouts. He has 72 total saves for the season. He earned his career high of nine saves at home against UCLA in late October. After allowing only one goal on the road against Stanford and Cal and totaling for 15 saves on the weekend. The redshirt junior earned Pac-12 Player of the Week Honors as well as Top Drawer Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
Midfielder Henry Wingo has started in 18 matches for the Dawgs this season. In the pre-season he was named to the Top Drawer National Top 100 and has proven why all season. In the midfield he has shown speed, versatility and reliability. He has played in 1,579 minutes for the Dawgs. The Seattle native has one assist and one goal on the season, which was the goal that allowed the squad to capture their second shutout over UCLA for the season.
