October 06, 2016 | Women's Tennis
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – In the first day of action at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, No. 13 Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi grabbed two wins to advance to the final eight in the main draw in doubles, including a huge upset over the No. 5 duo in the nation.
The Husky pair began the day with a matchup against a qualifying team from Virginia Tech, Elena Cerezo-Codina and Caroline Daxhelet, defeating them 8-1. However their next matchup was with the fourth seed in the bracket and fifth ranked duo in the country, Miho Kowase and Anna Sanford of Ohio State.
Trading points back and forth, neither duo took more than a one game lead, with Ohio State drawing the match at 6-6 after a 6-5 Husky lead. However, just as they did twice last year, Abbes and Kobayashi stepped up to the challenge, winning two straight to defeat a top five-ranked doubles pair for the third time in the last two seasons, by a final of 8-5.
Tomorrow the Huskies will face another team ranked in the top-10 in Pepperdine's Luisa Stefani and Jean Runglerkriangkrai, who are currently ranked sixth in the country and are the fifth seed in the doubles main draw. The match is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start time, and you can keep up with the action by clicking the link to the ITA event page above or by following us on Twitter @UW_WTennis.
