
First Day Of Action Concludes For UW At All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – The 2016-17 season is officially underway for the Washington men's tennis team, as five Huskies traveled to play in the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships at the University of Tulsa.
"It felt great to be back in action today," said Washington head coach Matt Anger. "All five guys are gaining from this event."
Junior Mitch Stewart began the day for the Dawgs in singles, defeating Notre Dame's Edward Covalschi 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the second round of qualifying singles. He will play Vaughn Hunter, a senior from Mississippi State, tomorrow.
Senior Gal Hakak opened play with a tough matchup against Texas' Yuya Ito and, after grabbing the first set 6-4, dropped the remaining two 7-5 and 6-4. Enzo Sommer was also eliminated from qualifying singles, falling to Jack Findel-Hawkins of North Florida 6-1, 6-4.
In the qualifying doubles bracket, Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe grabbed a first round win over Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Ayed Zatar Cordero of Middle Tennessee State in a tough 7-6(6), 7-6(2) match. In the second round however, they fell to North Florida's Jack Findell-Hawkins and Lasse Muscheites 6-3, 6-4.
