SEATTLE - The biggest test of the regular cross country season is on tap for Washington's ranked men's and women's squads, as the Dawgs are back in Madison for the Wisconsin Invitational. Held this Friday at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course, thirty-one teams on both sides, including 19 ranked men's squads and 17 ranked women's squads, will toe the line and the final standings will go a long way in deciding who will be lining up at the NCAA Championships in November.
There will be four races on Friday. The women's six-kilometer "B" race begins at 9 a.m. Pacific and will be followed by the men's eight-kilometer "B" race at 9:40 a.m. The championship races will conclude the meet, beginning with the women's six-kilometer at 10:30 a.m. Pacific and ending with the men's eight-kilometer at 11:20 a.m.
Flotrack will provide a live stream of the races with a Flotrack Pro subscription.
The fourth-ranked Husky women's team will be looking for a third straight impressive performance after winning the Sundodger and Washington Invitationals by comfortable margins. Teams are limited to seven runners in the invitational races, so the Huskies will go with Kaylee Flanagan, Katie Knight, Anna Maxwell, Kaitlyn Neal, Amy-Eloise Neale, Charlotte Prouse, and Nikki Zielinski. Five more Huskies will run in the women's "B" race: Izzi Batt-Doyle, Josephine Bosserman, Emily Hamlin, Grace Hodge, and Katherine Penner.
The women's field is led by No. 1-ranked Providence, and also features No. 3 North Carolina State, the Huskies at four, and No. 6 Michigan State, No. 10 Boise State, and last year's national champs, No. 11 New Mexico., plus several more ranked teams looking to make a statement.
The Husky men come in ranked 23rd and will run with Julius Diehr, Andrew Gardner, Colby Gilbert, Fred Huxham, Mahmoud Moussa, Andy Snyder, and Johnathan Stevens. The top-three teams in the nation on the men's side are all in the field: No. 1 Northern Arizona, No. 2 Syracuse, and No. 3 BYU. No. 7 Portland and No. 8 Iona add to the top-10 mix as UW looks to earn some key postseason points with a solid finish.
Finishing near the top at Wisconsin makes life much easier for teams moving into the postseason races, as the NCAA qualification process awards points for regular season wins against teams that place first or second at NCAA Regionals to automatically qualify for the NCAA meet. After the top two at each Regional are in, at-large bids are given to the teams with the highest "point total".
Friday's race will be the third and final regular season run for UW as the Pac-12 Championships are now just over two weeks away, which will be followed by Regionals and then hopefully a trip to Terre Haute for nationals for both Dawg squads.
