Huskies in First After Day One of Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational

TACOMA, Wash. – The reigning national championship University of Washington women's golf team currently leads the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational following day one Monday, Oct. 10 as it sits at 13-over 589 (291-298). Three Huskies are in the top 10 led by sophomore Julianne Alvarez, who is in third, two strokes out of the lead. The Dawgs have won the event for two-straight years and will look to extend that streak Tuesday morning.
"Overall, I thought we were very solid despite some tough weather conditions today," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We are in a position to win and at the end of the day, that's all you can ask for. We had some sound performances by our group and we saw some very good things. I think we got better today and this is just the first day of the season so there's a lot of golf left to play."
Alvarez, who won the event a year ago, posted nine birdies through 36 holes en route to her even-par 144. She opened the day with a 1-under 71, going blemish-free over her final 11 holes in round one. During her second 18, the weather played a factor over the first nine with five bogeys and three birdies but she tightened up and carded three birdies on the back nine to finish at even-par.
"Julianne was really, really solid," added Mulflur. "To see how she's grown from when she won this event a year ago to today is very impressive. She's grown so much and is having fun out there while understanding what's at stake. We all know what she's capable of, she just needs to go out there and continue to have fun and play her game."
Joining her in the top 10 is sophomore Sarah Rhee and freshman Ellen Takada who are both tied for eighth at 3-over 147 (74-73). Despite two double-bogey's, Rhee carded seven birdies on the day and sits just six shots out of the lead. In her first tournament as a Husky, Takada shot rounds of 72-75 with four birdies and was clean over her final six holes. She also opened the tournament with a birdie on her first hole of round one taking just two shots on the par-3 hole three.
Sophomore Clementina Rodriguez is tied for 16th at 7-over 151 as she posted rounds of 74 and 77, as she played in her first top five rotation since mid-season a year ago. Following her to round out the UW scoring contingent was sophomore Wenyung Keh, who knocked in an 8-over 152 to sit tied for 19th (74-78).
Playing as individuals were newcomers Eunwon Park, Esther Yin and Christina Wang. Yin is tied for 56th at 15-over 159 while Park and Wang are tied for 62nd at 17-over 161.
The Huskies start their final round of the event on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
