“We are so proud of this team tonight,” head coach Joanne Bowers said. “We challenged them all week – we needed to put four events together and have people step up. We did step up and show what we could do, and it felt wonderful. Everybody held themselves and each other accountable all night long, and you could tell in the demeanor of our gymnasts and the energy surrounding our team. This is exactly what we are capable of and we can't wait to go back home and show our fans how much we've improved.”
The Huskies came into the Metroplex Challenge ranked No. 36 in the country and took third ahead of No. 12 Stanford and No. 16 Missouri. Oklahoma, the meet's highest-ranked team at No. 2, finished in first place. No. 6 LSU took second.
UW's victory over Stanford leaves the GymDawgs' unbeaten in the Pac-12, as UW defeated ASU on Jan. 18.
“We really fed off the energy of the atmosphere of this meet, with so many great teams,” senior captain Allison Northey said. “We had a great week of practice and came out feeling loose, excited and not stressed. We built off each other and carried the momentum throughout the meet, and we are really excited about this performance.”
Northey and sophomore Joslyn Goings each had top-3 event finishes – Northey with a 9.925 on bars to tie for third and Goings with a 9.9 on beam, also tied for third. Goings recorded an all-around total of 39.175 in her first meet as a collegiate all-arounder. Northey took fourth in the all-around with a 39.425. Sophomore Hailey Burleson's 39.075 was her second straight personal-best all-around performance.
