TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 23 Washington settled for second place at the Arizona Intercollegiate as No. 10 Texas overtook the Dawgs during the final round from the Casino Del Sol Resort. The Huskies finished at 4-under, five shots back of the Longhorns for the title.
The Dawgs were led by top-three finishes from Frank Garber and Jonathan Sanders as Washington was one of just two teams under par. No. 21 California finished third at even-par, while the rest of the field was over par.
“We had a good shot at the win this week and I am proud of the way we competed,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “Frank has had two great tournaments in a row and Jonathan continues to be a stud for us.”
Saturday, the Huskies were led by Sanders who shot a 4-under 67 to finish in third place. Sanders made five birdies and just one bogey on the day to get his three-round total to 8-under.
Garber was the Dawgs top overall finisher, placing second at 9-under after a final round of even-par 71. Garber finished two shots back of Beau Hossler of Texas who took the individual title. Garber had two birdies and two bogeys on the day to begin the spring season with a runner-up finish.
Just missing a top-10 finish was Carl Yuan who finished in a tie for 11th at 3-over 216. Yuan finished with a final round of 4-over 75, taking an unfortunate 10 on the 14th hole. He made six birdies on the day, but the one bad hole cost him.
Rounding out the squad was Jordan Lu who shot a 6-over 77 to finish at 10-over 223. Lu tied for 32nd for the tournament.
“This is a good start to the spring for us,” said Thurmond. “It's a really good sign of what we have to come. This team has a chance to be really good.”
The Dawgs will next compete in the John Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawai'i next month. The three-day tournament will begin on February 17 and conclude February 19.
