SEATTLE – Two more Huskies were selected in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft as in concluded Tuesday over conference call. James Moberg and Josh Heard were each selected by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the third and fourth rounds, respectively.
Moberg was chosen with the ninth pick of the third round or 50th overall. He was projected to go much higher in the draft, but fell after playing in just six games for the Huskies this season due to a knee injury. Moberg is back on the pitch as he competed in the MLS Combine, looking to regain form that made him an All-Pac-12 Player for the Dawgs.
Moberg leaves Washington 10th in school history with 21 assists, while also scoring 10 goals. He played in 69 games and was an All-Pac-12 Second Team selection in both 2013 and 2014. He was also NSCAA All-Far West Region in 2014.
Heard was taken with the 10th pick of the fourth round or 71st overall, also by Vancouver. It will be a homecoming for the Victoria, B.C. native who played four years at winger for the Huskies. Heard finished his career with 13 goals and eight assists, while appearing in 74 games.
This past season, Heard played in all 19 games, leading the Dawgs offensive players in minutes. He scored a goal and tallied two assists, being named Honorable Mention All-Pac-12.
The selections of Moberg and Heard make it three Huskies taken in this year's MLS SuperDraft. Last week, Ryan Herman was taken in the first round by FC Dallas.
Over the past three seasons, seven Huskies have been taken in the MLS SuperDraft as Cristian Roldan, Andy Thoma and Spencer Richey were selected last season and Taylor Peay was taken after the 2013 season. Moberg and Heard will join Richey who was drafted by Vancouver and played for Whitecaps 2 of the USL last year.
