BALTIMORE, Md. – Washington senior Ryan Herman was selected in the first round of the Major League Soccer Superdraft on Thursday, taken by the FC Dallas with the 17th overall pick. It marks the third-consecutive season that a Husky has been taken in the first round.
Herman was a third team NSCAA All-American this year after leading the Pac-12 in every goalkeeping category. He allowed just 12 goals in 18 games, owning a 0.63 goals against average, while recording 10 shutouts, which was tied for sixth-best in the nation.
For the season, Herman made 85 saves, good for an 87.6 save percentage. He finished his Husky career with 140 saves, posting 18 shutouts and 22-7-9 record in net.
The native of Fall City, Wash., Herman took over as the starter in 2013 after an injury to Spencer Richey. He went on to start 18 games that year, leading the Dawgs to their best-ever team finish, an appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Richey returned to the starting role in 2014 and was drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the third round of last year's Superdraft. That opened the job for Herman once again and he excelled, becoming the 17th NSCAA All-American in program history.
Herman makes it five Huskies taken in the MLS Superdraft over the last three years. Cristian Roldan, Andy Thoma and Richey were selected last year, while Taylor Peay was taken in the 2014 Superdraft.
The Superdraft still has two rounds to go with rounds three and four on taking place on Tuesday, January 19. Among the potential picks in the finals two rounds are Huskies James Moberg, Josh Heard and Michael Gallagher.
