
Huskies Sweep In Doubleheader To Open Season

SEATTLE – The Huskies started the season off right today with two 7-0 victories over Eastern Washington and Seattle University in a doubleheader at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The day began with the Huskies sweeping Eastern Washington in doubles, as Nour Abbes and Grace Ysidora grabbed the first victory over Moira Hedberg and Erin Blessing 6-1. Elianne Douglas-Miron and Stacey Fung defeated Janaya Smith and Faye Worrall 6-2 while Miki Kobayashi and Kenadi Hance defeated Katrina Domingo and Dani Young shortly after 6-2.
Kobayashi was the first to finish in singles, defeating Worrall 6-0, 6-1, followed by Abbes on court two who defeated Hedberg 6-2, 6-2. Senior Douglas-Miron defeated Young 6-3, 6-1 as Hance defeated Rachel Swindell 6-1, 6-1 and Ysidora took down Blessing 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Stacey Fung upheld her ranking of No. 65 in the country against Janaya Smith in a 6-3, 6-3 victory, giving the Huskies a 7-0 win over Eastern Washington.
“It was good to see a few of our newcomers play their first dual matches and for the whole team to get started and get a couple of wins,” said head coach Robin Stephenson.
In the afternoon the Huskies began their match with Seattle off strong, as Douglas-Miron and Fung defeated Michelle Lui and Kelli Woodman 6-0. The Huskies continued their doubles dominance with Kobayashi and Ysidora defeating Madison Maloney and Barbara Carey 6-2, and Hance and Sophia Bott coming out victorious against Kristen James and Kailyn Skjonsby 6-3.
To finish off the day the Huskies swept the Redhawks in singles play, with Bott picking up the win over Audrey Scott 6-1, 6-2. Kobayashi defeated Sari Kwee 6-1, 6-0 while Hance defated Carey 6-0, 6-0. Ysidora grabbed another win today over Maloney 6-1, 6-0 and Fung grabbed her 12th singles win of the year over Lui 6-3, 6-1. Captain Douglas-Miron capped off the success for the Huskies today, defeating Woodman 6-1, 6-3.
“It's always good to identify some things we need to improve upon and also see the areas that we have improved since the fall,” said Stephenson. “We are looking forward to another challenge tomorrow against a good Portland team.”
