OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Washington golfers Corey Pereira and Chris Babcock both competed in the U.S. Amateur at the Olympia Fields Country Club this week (Aug. 17-23) in Olympia Fields, Ill..
Babcock qualified for the U.S. Amateur by placing first in the 2015 U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying at Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash. back in July. Pereira, though, was put on the qualifying exempt list for standing in the top 50 amateurs according to the World Amateur Golf Ranking™ (WAGR) as of June 24.
The U.S. Amateur tournament begins with a two-day stroke play event, then proceeds with a 64-person match play tournament to decide the winner.
In stroke play, Pereira shot a first-round 69 (-1) that consisted of three birdies and an eagle, followed by a second-round 71 (+1) to put him at even par over the two days. Babcock posted a two-day score of 148 that consisted of a 76 (+6) on day one and a 72 (+2) on day two.
Pereira ultimately advanced to the match play tournament, while Babcock missed the cut (3+) by five strokes.
In the round of 64, Pereira faced Ohio native Daniel Wetterich. The match was back-and-forth all round long, with neither player holding a two-hole lead until the 17th hole when Wetterich posted a par while UW's Pereira bogeyed (Witterich finished ahead, 2 and 1). You can follow the rest of the tournament at www.usga.org.
Pereira has had a busy and successful summer and will look to continue his success as the season is fast approaching. The Huskies first match (Husky Invitational) is on Sept. 21 at Tumble Creek in Suncadia, Wash.
