Pairs Tourney Wraps Season In The Sand
April 13, 2015 | Beach Volleyball
PALO ALTO, Calif. – After wrapping up an 8-0 dual match record, the Husky sand volleyball team closed out its 2015 season with its first ever pairs tournament at the Stanford Invitational. The Huskies picked up five wins over the three brackets today, going up for the first time against Pac-12 opponents UCLA and Stanford.
The brackets were split between the Nos. 1 and 2 pairs for each team, the Nos. 3 and 4 pairs, and the Nos. 5 and 6 pairs. Washington's best results came in the 3/4 bracket, where the teams of DeHoog/Vansant and Tanner/Schwan both advanced to the semifinals.
“We had a good weekend to say the least,” said head coach Keegan Cook. “We played hard. We had a bunch of really close losses today. Krista and Carly had a nice run; so did Bailey and Schwanny. Tia and Crissy lost a heartbreaker. Kaleigh and Cassie lost a two-pointer and so did Justice and Mel. So even the matches we lost we were a couple points away in most of them.”
In the 3 & 4 Bracket, Tanner and Schwan had to start in the first round while DeHoog and Vansant had a bye. Tanner and Schwan were playing the No. 4 team for Stanford, Kelsey Humphreys and Catherine Raquel, and the Huskies captured the one 28-point set, 28-19.
In the quarterfinals, DeHoog and Vansant got a win over the No. 3 team from UCLA, defeating Julie Consani and Laurel Weaver, 22-20 and 21-18. Tanner and Schwan then earned their tenth win of the year, knocking off the No. 3 St. Mary's team, Popovic/Wilkerson, 21-13, 21-18.
In the semis, Tanner and Schwan came out on the short end for the first time all year, falling 21-16, 21-14 to UCLA's Drolson/Inouye. Vansant and DeHoog were locked in a long one with Stanford's No. 3 Jordan Burgess and Merete Lutz. Burgess/Lutz won the first set, 21-16, but Vansant and DeHoog got the second set, 22-20, before Burgess and Lutz pulled out the third set, 15-11.
In the top bracket, freshmen Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray edged out Stanford's No. 2 pair of Madi Bugg and Ivana Vanjak, 28-26, in the first round. Jones and Scambray then had a marathon in the quarterfinals against the No. 1 St. Mary's team, but couldn't quite close it out. After a 21-16 first set win for Jones/Scambray, the Gaels eked out the second set, 22-20, and then needed extra points to win the third set, 19-17, marking the first loss all year for Jones and Scambray who finished 9-1.
Senior Kaleigh Nelson and junior Cassie Strickland had a bye in the first round, then played UCLA's No. 1 team, Zoe Nightingale and Kamila Tan, in the quarterfinals. Nightingale/Tan won the first set, 21-14, but Nelson and Strickland fought back in set two, tying things at 22-all, but UCLA scored the last two points to earn the victory.
The Huskies had one more win today from Justice Magraw and Melanie Wade in the first round of the 5 & 6 Bracket, as they cruised to a 28-15 win over the Stanford pair of Benjamin/Brown. In the quarterfinals, it was another 28-point match format, with the No. 5 UCLA team of Lexi Jasper-Baylin and Ivey Schmitt just holding off Wade/Magraw by a 30-28 score.
Jade Finau and Lianna Sybeldon played Stanford's No. 6 Petra Grutzik and Dana Ritchie in the first round, but fell 28-18.
“Training as much as we have with the players we have, I'm really satisfied with our results this season,” said Cook. “It feels good to meet our goals with what we set out to do. Of course we want to win every single match we played today, but I'm happy. You get a glimpse into the future a bit with where the sport is heading."
