SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – After a long day at the 69th annual Western Intercollegiate, No. 8 Washington sits in fifth place at 24-over 724. The Dawgs are 17 strokes back of first-place Stanford who is 7-over after the first 36 holes.
The Dawgs were tied for fourth after the first round, nine strokes back of No. 3 Texas. After two rounds, No. 13 Stanford took the lead at 7-over, five strokes clear of the Longhorns. Washington is 17 back after rounds of 5-over 355 and 19-over 369.
“The afternoon round was as hard as any we will ever play,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “The wind was blowing and the greens were really fast and bumpy. At any moment, the smallest mistake would lead to double or triple bogey.”
The Western Intercollegiate is an unusual format that scores five players out of six, instead of the usual four of five of a college tournament. Playing the Pasatiempo Golf Club, the course became more difficult as the day wore on.
“It's days like today that all you feel is admiration for these guys and what they choose out of themselves emotionally,” said Thurmond. “I thought we really competed well. It was a serious grind out there.”
The Huskies were led by Corey Pereira who is tied for eighth at even par. Pereira shot a round of 2-under 68 in the morning, before a 2-over 72 in the afternoon. He made seven birdies on the day and is six shots back of Scottie Scheffler of Texas who holds the 36-hole lead at 6-under.
The best first round for the Dawgs came from freshman Frank Garber who is coming off a win at the Redhawk Invitational earlier this week. Garber opened with a 3-under 67, which was just one shot off the lead over the opening 18. In the afternoon, Garber shot a 4-over 74 and is tied for 12th, seven shots off the overall lead.
“Corey and Frank played together and had a great vibe,” said Thurmond. “They played very well.”
Jonathan Sanders is also playing well for the Dawgs and is tied for 18th after 36 holes. The Husky junior opened with a round of 3-over 73, before having one of the best rounds in the afternoon, an even-par 70.
The top-ranked Husky, Cheng-Tsung Pan is tied for 37th at 8-over 148. Pan played well in the morning, shooting an even-par 70, but struggled in the afternoon with an 8-over 148. His round included two triple bogeys and a double.
Freshman Greg Gildea had his score kept in the second round with a 5-over 75. He is tied for 64th at 12-over for the tournament.
Finally, Tyler Salsbury is in 85th place after rounds of 8-over 78 and 12-over 82.
The Dawgs will be back in action on Sunday for the final round of the Western Intercollegiate. The tightly packed field with several of the top-ranked teams in the nation will be decided over a final 18 holes at the Pasatiempo Golf Club.
