No. 54 Huskies Fall, 4-3, in Close Match with No. 24 Drake

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 54 Washington men's tennis team battled hard in a close 4-3 loss to No. 24 Drake Saturday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Huskies, playing in just their third road match of the season, are now 8-4 on the year.
“This was a tough loss for us today,” said head coach Matt Anger. “We were right there in it but we now know we can compete with these top teams and do it on the road, which is promising for our program.”
The Dawgs took the lead after clinching the doubles point despite Drake winning first on court three. UW responded with Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke defeating Ben Lott and Bayo Phillips at number one doubles, 6-2. Joao Barra and Viktor Farkas followed that up with a 6-3 victory on court two to give UW the point.
Singles action started off with a huge victory for freshman Mitch Stewart. The newcomer earned his first win over a ranked opponent at number one singles as he knocked off No. 34 Ben Lott, 6-3, 6-2.
With UW up 2-0, Drake answered with wins on two, three and five. Freshman Jake Douglas had his 15-match win streak snapped after falling 6-3, 6-4 to No. 55 Allen Salibasic while Egger fell 6-3, 6-2 on court three and Barra dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision on court five.
Gal Hakak evened the match by battling for a 7-6, 6-2 win at number four singles over Ben Stride moving his singles record to 11-3 on the year. The deciding match came down to court six where Jeff Hawke fought hard against Calum MacGeoch before falling 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. Hawke was right there with two match points along the way but lost the tiebreaker, 7-4.
All three of UW's losses this season have come on the road against top 40 opponents. Up next for the Dawgs is a double-header against Seattle U at home on Friday, March 13 starting at 4 p.m.
