WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – No. 20 Washington played another lights out round at the Amer Ari Invitational at the Wailoa Kings' Course on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Cheng-Tsung Pan and Corey Pereira each delivered bogey-free rounds of 7-under 65 to vault the Huskies to a three-stroke lead.
Washington is at at 30-under for the tournament, three stokes better than No. 14 USC. No. 13 Auburn is third at 22-under.
For the day, the Dawgs fired a round of 19-under 269, making only three bogies from the four scoring players. Pan matched Thursday's bogey-free round of 65 to take over the lead at 14-under for the tournament. He leads by two shots over Rico Hoey of USC with three players including Pereira tied for third at 9-under.
“Today felt like a much better day,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “We had two guys shoot 65 with no bogeys; that is remarkable.”
Describing Pan's back-to-back bogey-free 65's, Thurmond had only one word, “Amazing.”
The Husky senior and top-ranked collegiate golfer in the nation had a second-straight day of five birdies and an eagle without a blemish to his card. Pereira made seven birdies without a bogey for his 65.
“Corey's play around the greens was as good as I've ever seen in a round,” said Thurmond. “He didn't even hit the ball very well and still shot 65.”
Third for the Dawgs is Jonathan Sanders who fired a round of 4-under 68 to get to 5-under for the tournament. He is now tied for 16th after six birdies and two bogeys.
“Jonathan was his same solid self,” said Thurmond.
Rounding out the scorers was freshman Frank Garber who finished with a second-straight round of 1-under 71. He was also steady, making just a single bogey to go with two birdies to get into a tie for 39th.
Kevin Kwon did not have his score kept, but improved on his first round with a 2-over 74. He is now tied for 103rd overall.
Playing as individuals, Jordan Lu and Chris Babcock each finished with rounds of even-par 72. Lu is now tied for 39th with Garber at 2-under for the tournament. Babcock is back in a tie for 90th after struggling on the first day.
Saturday, the Dawgs will go for the win at the Amer Ari Invitational, which would be their first of the season. Pan continues to lead Husky squad playing with a lot of confidence after beginning the tournament with two great rounds.
