TEMPE, Ariz. -- Washington softball earned two wins on the second day of the Littlewood Classic to improve to 7-2 on the season. The Huskies beat North Texas, 5-2 before notching another run-rule victory over Illinois State, 9-1.
The Huskies benefitted from 23 total hits on the day while the pitching staff combined to give up eight hits and just three earned runs, giving starters Casey Stangel and Hailey Bator their second and fourth wins of the season, respectively. The pair remain undefeated as Stangel improves to 2-0 and Bator 4-0.
Offensively, senior Kylee Lahners led the Huskies, recording four RBI off four hits in the two games, including her first home run of the season and 39th of her career.
Washington 5, North Texas 2 | Stats
In the first game of the day, North Texas took an early lead in the second inning after a single and two-run home run gave the visiting team a 2-0 advantage. The Husky defense buckled down, however, and did not allow another run the remainder of the game, while the offense went on to score at least one run in the final four frames.
Stangel's RBI single in the third gave the Huskies their first run as she knocked home freshman Taylor Van Zee who drew a walk and advanced off Lahners' single. Washington tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth after Ali Aguilar's RBI single scored Dani Braun who doubled.
The UW took the lead in the fifth after Lahners drew a walk and pinch runner Kelly Meggs scored off Kelli Suguro's single. The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the sixth for extra measure after freshman Trysten Melhart hit a bunt single, stole second and came home off another single by Aguilar. Lahners' double then scored Aguilar and the Huskies went on top, 5-2.
The Mean Green attempted a comeback in the seventh after a single and an error put a pair on but a ground out ended the game as Washington earned their sixth win of the season.
Stangel (2-0) tossed a complete seven innings, allowing two runs off five hits while striking out three.
