ROLLING HILLS, Calif. – The Washington women's tennis team's fall season came to a close today, as they wrapped up play at the Jack Kramer Invitational. The Huskies continued their upward trend from the USTA/ITA Regional Championship last weekend, as they had three remaining in the main draw on the final day of play.
In singles freshman Stacey Fung capped off a strong fall reaching the finals match before falling to Maiar Ahmed of Fresno St. 6-1, 7-5. She defeated Oregon's Shweta Sangwan for the second time this fall to advance in the semifinals 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Tami Grende delivered an impressive encore to her outing at the USTA/ITA Regional, reaching the quarterfinals for the second straight tournament. She defeated Grainne O'Neill of Ohio St. before falling to the 9th seed Zoe Katz of USC 6-3, 6-3.
“We had a lot of great quality matches this weekend and are continuing to make progress individually and as a team,” said head coach Robin Stephenson.
In doubles, Grende and Miki Kobayashi teamed up to advance to the semifinal round before falling to sister duo Maiar and Rana Ahmed of Fresno St. in a close match 8-6.
“We have a lot of work to do heading into our off season to get ready for the spring,” said Stephenson. “This was a good tournament for us to end the fall season on.”
The Huskies next action will mark the beginning of the regular season, as they open up at home against Eastern Washington January 9th at 9 a.m. in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
