Sybeldon Extends UW's Player Of The Week Streak
November 24, 2015 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – Washington volleyball has now claimed over half of the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week awards this season, as the Huskies claimed the award today for the fourth week in a row. Today's honor went to senior middle blocker Lianna Sybeldon, following a three-week win streak for Cassie Strickland.
It's the second honor this season for Sybeldon, to go with the three for Strickland, and two for Melanie Wade, giving the Huskies seven wins out of the 13 weeks thus far.
In last week's road wins against the Oregon schools, Sybeldon averaged 2.29 kills per set on .394 hitting, while posting an incredible 2.71 blocks per set.
In the 3-0 victory over the Beavers, Sybeldon posted six kills and seven total blocks. She then recorded 10 kills, two digs and a career-high 12 total blocks in Washington's 3-1 win against the Ducks. Sybeldon currently leads the nation in hitting percentage at .479 and has helped the Husky defense to a No. 8 ranking in opponent hitting percentage at .149.
Sybeldon also became the third Husky ever to surpass 500 career blocks last week, doing so against the Beavers. She is now up to 513 for her career.
This is Sybeldon's fifth-career weekly accolade and third this season (offensive - Oct. 12, defensive - Sept. 14). It is the 18th all-time Defensive Player of the Week honor for the Huskies, the most in the Pac-12 since the award was added in 2011.
Washington closes out the regular season this week with a trip to Utah on Wednesday, followed by Senior Night this Saturday, Nov. 28, at 8:00 p.m.
