PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Three Huskies dropped their opening matches this past weekend at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in the pre-qualifying singles round.
“It was great to have three players representing Washington at a national event,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “But unfortunately we lost in some close matches against top competition.”
Senior Elianne Douglas-Miron fell to No. 108 Yuriko Lily Miyazaki of Oklahoma 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) Saturday afternoon. Newcomers Nour Abbes and Tami Grende also competed, but failed to advance to the next rounds.
Grende lost to Kelsey Laurente of Oklahoma State 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (1), while Caroline Ryba of Minnesota advanced as Abbes retired.
“We got a lot of positives out of the weekend,” said Stephenson. “We just need to keep working hard, and get excited about the direction this team is heading.”
The Huskies open up play at home this coming weekend with the Washington Invitational. The three day event begins Friday at 9 a.m. and will include Kentucky, Oregon and Pepperdine.
