PORTLAND, Ore. – Washington is off to a solid start at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational, led by a round of 5-under 66 from Corey Pereira. The Dawgs are tied for seventh at 4-under against a loaded field at Pumkin Ridge.
Wake Forest leads the tournament after 18 holes, shooting a round of 15-under 269 to lead by three stroke over USC and Stanford who are tied for second. Georgia sits in fourth at 8-under and then spots 5-10 are separated by just two strokes.
The Huskies came into the tournament as one of 11 ranked teams at the annual Nike Tournament, which features some of the best competition of the fall.
Pereira led Washington, playing a nearly flawless round that included six birdies and just one bogey. He is currently tied for second, just two back of leader Davis Womble of Wake Forest who leads after a 7-under 64. The Husky junior is in a four-way tie with David Boote and Maverick McNealy of Stanford and Lee McCoy of Georgia.
The Huskies also got an under-par round from Jonathan Sanders who fired a 2-under 69 and is tied for 17th. The senior made four birdies and two bogeys on the day.
Playing as the Huskies No. 1 was freshman Carl Yuan who finished with an even-par 71. A week after being the Dawgs top finisher in the Alabama, the rookie from China was strong again.
The last score kept came from Jordan Lu who fired a 3-over 74. Lu is tied for 61st after making three birdies, four bogeys and double.
The final Husky competitor was freshman Matt Marrese who fired a 4-over 75. He is tied for 65th, making four birdies, but also six bogeys and double.
For Sunday's first round the teams played at Pumpkin Ridge's Ghost Creek Course, but will play Monday's second round and Tuesday's final round at the Witch Hollow Course. The Huskies will be part of the early tee times off the first tee, beginning at 8 a.m., playing with Clemson and Oklahoma.
