PORTLAND, Ore. – Corey Pereira continued his hot play at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational on Monday, firing a round of 2-under 70 to sit just three shots off the lead. Pereira paced the Dawgs who were even par as a team, falling to 12th place overall against one of the top fields of the fall season.
The Dawgs were 4-over for Tuesday's second round played at Witch Hollow Golf Course at Pumpkin Ridge, a switch from the Ghost Creek Course that hosted the first round.
Entering the day tied for seventh, the Huskies slipped to 12th, 26 shots back of leader Wake Forest who had a round of 11-under to get to 26-over overall. USC sits in second two shots back, while Duke is four back and Stanford is six back.
Pereira sits in a tie for fifth just three back of co-leaders Beau Hossler of Texas and Max Greyserman of Duke. Adam Wood of Duke and Sean Crocker of USC are tied for third at 8-under, while Pereira and four others are tied for fifth.
The Husky junior already has one tournament title to his name this fall, winning the Husky Invitational in September. He made four birdies and two bogeys on the day and now has 10 birdies through 36 holes.
Also contending for the Huskies is Jonathan Sanders who is just one back of Pereira and tied for 10th. Sanders had the low round of the day for the Dawgs, firing a 4-under 68 to get to 6-under for the week.
The Dawgs third score came from freshman Matt Marrese who shot a 3-over 75 to get to 7-over for the week. He made three birdies and now has seven birdies for the tournament.
Jordan Lu had the last score kept, shooting a 7-over 79. He made four birdies, but also had five bogeys, a double bogey and a quadruple bogey.
Carl Yuan could not follow up his even-par first round, shooting 8-over 80 on Tuesday. He's tied for 68th after struggling for the first time in his young collegiate career.
The Huskies will be back on the Witch Hollow Course on Tuesday for the final round. The Dawgs will play with Oregon and Vanderbilt starting at 8:20 a.m., teeing off the 10th hole.
