SEATTLE – The Huskies finished with a day of singles as the Washington Invitational came to a close after three days of competition against Kentucky, Oregon and Pepperdine.
The Huskies began the day against Oregon, as Tami Grende fell to Kennan Johnson 6-4, 6-3 and Stacey Fung defeated Shweta Sangwan 6-4, 6-1. Fung finished the weekend undefeated, going 6-0 in singles and doubles combined including a win against No. 65 Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai of Pepperdine on Saturday.
“It was great to open our fall season at home and play on our courts,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “The format was great because it gave the freshman a taste of college tennis.”
Captain Elianne Douglas-Miron triumphed in a three-setter against Oregon's Daniela Nasser 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 as Kenadi Hance fell to Oregon's Marlou Kluiving 6-3, 6-3. Miki Kobayashi fell to No. 78 Aldila Sutjiadi of Kentucky while Grace Ysidora defeated Kirsten Lewis of Kentucky 6-4, 6-4. Ysidora improved to a combined 5-0 on the weekend with three singles and two doubles victories. Sophia Bott finished up the tournament with a close three set match against Micheline Aubuchon of Oregon but fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
“We learned a ton about the team and are excited to get back to practice to work on some things before our regional championship,” Stephenson said. “We are glad Oregon, Kentucky and Pepperdine came to play, we had a lot of great quality matches.”
As a team the Huskies finished with 21 total wins to only 10 loses. In doubles, the Dawgs won 10 matches losing only one, which was to the No. 9 duo in the country.
