STANFORD, Calif. – The Washington women's tennis team returned to Seattle after a good showing at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships this past weekend at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Three Huskies advanced to semifinals matches on Monday, including freshman Tami Grende, and doubles team Miki Kobayashi and Grace Ysidora. Grende made it to yesterday's quarterfinals round where she faced No. 33 Denise Starr of California, and won 7-6(7), 6-2. She faced another tough opponent in No. 15 Taylor Davidson of Stanford but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-3.
Kobayashi and Ysidora battled their way to the quarterfinals round Sunday as well, where they defeated Anneka and Sophie Watts of Fresno State 8-5. After winning four in a row however, they fell to Davidson and Caroline Doyle of Stanford 6-1, 6-2 in Monday's semifinal match.
“This weekend was a huge step forward for our team,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “Everyone is finding their place on the team and we are finding our identity as a whole.”
Seniors Elianne Douglas-Miron and Sophia Bott also saw some success in Stanford. Douglas-Miron made it to the round of 16 before falling to Starr 6-4, 6-3, while Bott won her first two matches before losing to Sybille Gauvain of San Jose State 6-3, 6-0.
“I am so proud of the way the girls competed and focused on improvement with each match,” Stephenson said. “It was great to have our team represented in the semifinals of both singles and doubles. We are looking forward to getting back to practice this week”
The Huskies next fall tournament comes November 5th, when they head to Los Angeles for the Jack Kramer Invitational. Keep up to date with the Dawgs during tournament season on Facebook, or on Twitter @UW_WTennis.
