Newcomers and Veterans Combine to Lead UW to 7-0 Sweep of Portland State

SEATTLE – The University of Washington men's tennis team used a combination of veteran players and newcomers to open the 2015 season with a 7-0 victory over Portland State, Saturday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies played three freshmen during singles action en route to the sweep.
“It's always hard in season-opening matches to have big expectations and since we were putting three guys out there that haven't played a collegiate match before, we just wanted to see how everyone did,” said head coach Matt Anger. “As far as how the match went, we were making some more balls and doing some good things out there. Portland State's program is improving though as well and that was a good win for us to start the spring season.”
The Huskies took the doubles point after the No. 39 ranked duo of Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke opened play with a 6-3 win on court one followed by a 6-3 victory on court two by Viktor Farkas and Gal Hakak.
Heading into singles action, the Huskies put freshmen on courts two, four and six, including newcomer Joao Barra that has only been with the team since the start of the winter quarter this past week. Senior Viktor Farkas got the Huskies started off right though, with a 6-0, 6-0 win on court five. Freshman Mitch Stewart, who is ranked 78th nationally, followed suit by taking a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number two singles.
“Mitch is as advertised,” said Anger. “He's so tough. Guys don't want to play him because they know it's going to take a lot of hard work and that he puts a different kind of pressure on them.”
Newcomer Jake Douglas claimed the next win for UW as he posted a 6-0, 6-2 decision in his first match with the Dawgs. Joao Barra also earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court six, while sophomore Gal Hakak went 6-1, 6-0 on court three and senior Egger posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at number one singles.
Up next for UW, the Dawgs head to Palm Springs for the Collegiate Challenge, Jan. 16, then return home for four-straight matches starting Friday, Jan. 23 with East Tennessee State.
