SEATTLE – No. 4 Washington suffered a setback on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Field, falling to Saint Mary's in overtime, 2-1. The Dawgs dominated possession and created plenty of opportunities, but struggled to finish and let the Gaels back in the game after having the early lead.
“It came down to finishing, but my biggest thing was we should win that game, 1-0. When you're up 1-0, you don't give up a goal.”
The Dawgs fell despite outshooting the Saint Mary's, 33-8. Washington had countless opportunities in front of goal, but the Gael defenders always seemed to get a deflection or goalkeeper Andre Rawls was there for a save. Rawls made nine saves as the Dawgs put 10 shots on goal.
“If we could take half as many shots and score twice as many goals, we'd be happy,” said head coach Jamie Clark. “If you are going to be a big-time goal scorer, it's not about frustration, it's about being better.”
The game went to the half scoreless with Washington outshooting Saint Mary's, 12-4. The Gaels did have a chance to take the lead in the 43rd minute, but Spencer Richey made a big save. Richey would make two saves for the game, while also negating the aerial game with a few nice catches on crosses.
After the half, the Dawgs came out the aggressor, taking the lead in the 50th minute. Josh Heard got the scoring play started, carrying his dribble down the right wing. Heard found Darwin Jones in the box. The senior striker shielded the ball at the top of the six-yard box and then laid the ball off to Mason Robertson who blasted it first time.
The goal from Robertson was the first of the season and seventh of his young Husky career. Jones earned his second assist for his team-leading eighth point.
Washington kept up the pressure, having plenty of chances in the Saint Mary's box. The second goal never came, however, and instead the Gaels found an equalizer.
Jake Stenberg scored for Saint Mary's, tapping in a cross from Michael Semenza.
The game stayed 1-1 until the end of regulation, despite Robertson nearly winning it with two seconds left, but his blast went just wide.
In overtime, the Gaels won it on a counter-attack. Semenza set up the goal for a second time, getting free on the left side and finding a wide open Antonio Lokossou in front of goal.
The loss drops Washington back to 2-1-0, while Saint Mary's improves to 1-2-0. The win for the Gaels was against the highest ranked opponent in school history.
Washington will be right back at it next weekend with a pair of home games at Husky Soccer Field. The Dawgs will face a stiff test of Friday night when No. 21 Connecticut comes to town at 7:30 p.m. on game seen live on the Pac-12 Networks. Sunday at 1 p.m., Washington faces Pennsylvania for the last home game in the month of September.
