SEATTLE – The University of Washington women's soccer team lost its opener at the Husky Nike Invitational to the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers 4-0 Friday night at Husky Soccer Field.
After a hard-fought first half, the Huskies trailed the Badgers 1-0 behind a 10th minute goal from Kodee Williams, her second of the season. Williams was free on a breakaway and caught UW keeper Megan Kufeld out of position, chipping a shot from the edge of the box and into the right corner of the net.
UW had chances throughout the first half and played possession fairly evenly, but failed to capitalize on any opportunities to even the score.
Wisconsin came out firing in the second half and scored twice in a four-minute span to put the game out of reach, with goals from Kinley McNicoll and Brianna Stelzer in the 48th and 51st minutes respectively. The Badgers stretched the lead to 4-0 on Cara Walls' 76th minute tally, her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Huskies put pressure on late to try and get on the board, recording six shots in the second half.
The Nike Husky Invitational continues Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. PT with Wisconsin and Portland squaring off. UW will take on Dartmouth in the tournament finale at 4 p.m. The match between the Huskies and the Big Green will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
