UW Drops Heartbreaker To Oregon
September 26, 2014 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Oregon – After dominating possession and pressuring the Oregon defense throughout the second half and overtime, UW women's soccer lost its Pac-12 opener to the Ducks 1-0 on a golden goal in the 14th minute of overtime.
“We talked about not making that one mistake when we hadn't scored yet, and it happened,” UW head coach Lesle Gallimore said. “We had the chances. That's the thing that hurts the most- that we could have had points out of it and we ended up with zero. We have to come back and get ready to play a good Portland team on Sunday.”
Oregon junior Kira Wagoner scored her first goal of the season during the second overtime period to give the Ducks their first victory over the Huskies since 2006 and only their third all-time. Wagoner found herself behind the Washington defense and dribbled to her right, bringing Kufeld off her line. Wagoner then chipped a shot over Kufeld that bounced into the left corner of the goal.
With the loss, the Washington falls to 6-3-0 and Oregon improves to 5-3-1.
After a fairly even first half, the Huskies played on Oregon's half for much of the second period and overtime. The Dawgs pressured the Ducks' defense and produced many opportunities but failed to capitalize. Officially, the Huskies finished with 12 shots and eight corners to Oregon's 10 shots and three corners.
Jaclyn Softli just missed giving the Huskies a lead twice. She found a seam along the left side and caught Oregon keeper Abby Steele off her line, but her lobbed shot landed just wide of the empty net. At the beginning of the second overtime, defender Havana McElvaine played a cross into the box that found Softli, but she just missed a clean shot and the ball sailed wide yet again.
Amanda Perez, Kate Bennett and Shannon Simon each had shots and dangerous opportunities as well.
The Huskies resume play with a stop in Portland to face the Pilots in each team's final non-conference game. The match will kick off at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday, Sept. 29 and will be streamed live on GoPilots.com.
