ALPHARETTA, Ga. – No. 20 Washington had another solid, but unspectacular day at the U.S. Collegiate Championship, dropping into a tie for 10th against a loaded field. The Dawgs shot 2-over 290 for the second-straight day at the Golf Club of Georgia and are now 4-over for the tournament.
“We played decent, but this is an NCAA Championship type field,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “Just playing okay doesn't get you much out here.”
It was a day that the leaders came back to the field, making for a tightly bunched leaderboard. The Dawgs are just 14 shots out of the lead held by No. 9 Texas who is at 10-under for the tournament after a round of even-par 288. The Longhorns are one shot better than No. 25 Virginia who held the first round lead, but fell back after a round of 7-over 295. Texas A&M is third at 6-under with the rest of the field tightly bunched. Only nine shots separate fourth from 13th.
The Dawgs were led by freshman Jordan Lu who fired a round of 3-under 69 to rocket up the leaderboard into a tie for 42nd. Playing the back nine first, Lu made three birdies and just one bogey, then birdied the fifth to get it to 3-under. A disappointing double-bogey on the seventh seemed to spoil a great round, but the freshman bounced back, eagling his final hole, the ninth, to get it back to 3-under. He is now 3-over for the tournament after one of just 10 rounds in the 60's on Saturday.
Also under par for the Huskies was sophomore Kevin Kwon with a round of 1-under 71. He had a solid day of three birdies and just two bogeys to move up into a tie for 50th at 4-over for the tournament.
“The guys that played poorly yesterday, played well today,” said Thurmond. “The guys who played well yesterday, played poorly today. That is kind of how it has been going for us, but I am sure we will get it going before long.”
One of those that played great yesterday was Cheng-Tsung Pan, who came into the day tied for fourth, but after a 3-over 75, dropped to a tie for 14th. At 2-under for the tournament, Pan is still within striking distance of the lead that is held by Denny McCarthy of Virginia at 9-under.
Corey Pereira was the other Husky scorer, matching Pan with a 3-over 75. Pereira is now at 4-over for the tournament and tied for 50th with Kwon and others.
Finally, Tyler Salsbury shot an 11-over 83 and fell back into a tie for 76th at 12-over.
Washington will be back on the course Sunday morning, teeing off the 10th hole beginning at 6:50 a.m., PT. The Dawgs look to move up the leaderboard, playing with Iowa and UCLA.
“With a good round tomorrow, we'll be right back in it,” said Thurmond.
