STANFORD, Calif. – No.1 Washington got off to a hot start and was among the leaders, but faltered over the final few holes and dropped back to tie for ninth after the first round at the Stanford Intercollegiate presented by Condoleezza Rice. The Dawgs finished the day at 4-over 288, nine strokes out of first place.
"Overall play was solid and the starting five combined for 16 birdies," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We just left a few shots out there with some of our decision making. Looking forward to a better day tomorrow."
No. 10 UCLA leads after an opening round of 5-under 279. No. 4 Stanford and No. 5 Northwestern and tied for second at 2-under, three shots back. No. 6 USC and Kentucky are at even-par and tied for fourth. The Dawgs are in a big grouping of teams, just over par.
Washington was 3-under when they made the turn, but struggled on holes 13, 14, and 15 of the Stanford Golf Course. Cyd Okino leads the way for Washington after an even-par 71. She made four birdies and four bogies on the day and is tied for 17th, six strokes back of leader Bronte Law of UCLA.
Husky senior SooBin Kim is actually closest to the lead for Washington, but she is playing as an individual so her score won't count towards the team. Kim shot a round of 2-under 69 and is four off the lead. She is playing as an individual due to some back stiffness, which leaves the option of withdrawing without hurting the team.
Also playing well for the Dawgs were Charlotte Thomas and Eimi Koga who each fired an opening round of 1-over 72 and are tied for 28th. Both players made three birdies and four bogeys, but were better over the opening nine holes than after making the turn.
The final scorer for Washington was Jennifer Yang at 2-over 73. She made three birdies and five bogeys and is tied for 45th place.
Finally, Ying Luo is tied for 59th after a round of 3-over 74. Luo made the turn at even-par, but played the back nine at 3-over.
The Dawgs will be back on the course on Saturday for the second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate. Washington will tee off the first hole, beginning at 8:30 a.m. playing with Iowa State and Pepperdine.
