Huskies Fire Low Round Of Day At Bandon Dunes

BANDON, Ore. -- A day after finishing 17th out of 18 teams, the Huskies fired the low round on Saturday at the Bandon Dunes Invitational.
The Huskies opened on Friday with a 310, but were 16 shots better on the par-72 Old Macdonald Course in the second round with a 4-under 284. Washington is eighth overall at 18-over 594.
"We tried hard yesterday, it was just one of those really, really bad days," reflected Husky Coach Matt Thurmond. "I'm just proud of the way the guys came back today and I think that we'll have another really good round tomorrow."
Colorado was the only other team to shoot under par on Saturday. They fired a 2-under 286 and lead the field at 1-over 577. San Jose is second at +7, followed by Oregon, who is the only other team less than double-digits over par at +8.

Chris Williams, the tournament's defending champion, shot 2-under 70 to lead Washington's efforts. He is tied for 14th at 146 (+2). Wiliams got as low as 3-under for the round twice, but a bogey on the No. 18 made him settle for 70.
Freshman Jonathan Sanders is all square with Williams in 14th place. Sanders were 1-under for the day. He had five birdies on the day.
Senior Charlie Hughes, the 2011 tournament champion, was the only other Husky to shoot under par. He fired a 71 and is tied for 55th at 8-over 152.
Hughes was 2-over after 14 holes, but a birdie on No. 15 and an eagle on the par-5 17th hole got him into the red.
Cheng-Tsung Pan was even on the day is tied for 53rd at 7-over 151. He had two birdies and two bogeys.
Trevor Simsby shot 77 and is tied for 78th.
The Huskies also have three golfers competing as individuals. Tyler Salsbury is tied for 19th at 3-over 147. He shot even-par 72 on Saturday.
Larry Iverson is tied for 43rd at +6.
Chris Babcock shot 3-under 69 a day after shooting 84. The freshman is 9-over and tied for 60th.
Byron Meth of Pacific leads the tournament at 4-under 140. He has a one shot lead over Fresno State's Triox Tonkham.
