Live Scoring
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i -- The Husky men's golf team combined to shoot 13-under 275 in the second round of the Ameri Ari Invitational on Thursday to leap-frog three teams and take a two-shot advantage heading into Friday's final round at Waikoloa Kings' Course on the Big Island of Hawai'i.
The seventh-ranked Huskies are 21-under (555) overall for the tournament, while No. 4 UCLA is -19. Texas is third at 14-under, followed by USC (-12) and Georgia Tech (-10) to round out the top-five of 20 teams competing at the 54-hole, three day tournament.
Chris Williams and Trevor Simsby are both 6-under 139 after 36 holes to lead the Huskies. The Ben Hogan Award watch list members are one shot behind co-leaders Pontus Widegren of UCLA and Cody Gribble of Texas.
Simsby equaled low-round for the tournament by firing a scorching 6-under 66. He birdied eight holes, including the first four he played. The junior would bogey twice during his magnificent round, but re-established himself in the title hunt after shooting even-par 72 in Wednesday's first round.
Williams, the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, shot a steady 2-under 70 that included three birdies and just one bogey. The senior is trying to extend his already school record six win total.
Sophomore Cheng-Tsung Pan and freshman Jonathan Sanders are next among Huskies on the leader board and are tied for 11th in the 116-player field. The duo have shot 140 (-4) after two rounds of play.
Sanders, playing in his first road tournament, shot 3-under 69 - the only Husky besides Simsby to shoot in the 60's. The first-year player from Chatsworth, Calif. had five birdies and the lone eagle by a Husky.
Pan, who finished no worse than third if four fall events, sits three shots behind the leaders after his second-consecutive 70.
Freshman Chris Babcock shot a non-counting 75. The Shoreline, Wash. native is tied for 55th at 2-over 146.
Gerrit Chambers is competing as an individual and is tied for 79th after shooting a 78 and moving to +6 overall.
The tournament wraps up tomorrow with a shotgun start.
