Live Scoring
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i -- Washington is fourth out of 20 teams after the first round of the Ameri Ari Invitational at Waikoloa Kings' Course on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The Huskies combined to shoot 8-under 280 in their first spring test and are three strokes behind co-leaders TCU and UCLA.
Texas is third after shooting 279. Auburn is fifth, one shot behind the Huskies.
"It was a solid day," is how Coach Matt Thurmond summed up after his team's opening round. "It wasn't spectacular, but everybody had a pretty decent round."
The 7th-ranked Huskies were led by Chris Williams, the world's top ranked amateur, after he fired a 4-under 68 in the first round. The Ben Hogan Award watch list member is tied for second with eight other golfers, one shot behind TCU's Daniel Jennevret.
Cheng-Tsung Pan, also a Hogan Award watch list member, recorded the second-best round of the day among Huskies after he shot 2-under 70. Teammate Gerrit Chambers, who is competing as an individual, also shot 70. They are among nine golfers tied for 14th.
A pair of Husky freshmen -- Chris Babcock -- who are making their first road trips of their short careers both ended the first round at 1-under 71. The youngsters are tied for 23rd.
"I'm excited for those guys," Thurmond said of his freshmen duo. "It's a big deal for them to come out here and start and play well like they did."
Trevor Simsby shot a non-counting 72. His even-par score was the best score among the 20 players who didn't count towards their team's total. The junior Hogan Award watch member is tied for 39th.
This is the 23rd installment of the Ameri Ari Invitational. Golfers will play 36 more holes over the next two days. Each day will start with a shotgun start.
