Huskies Back In Win Column With Shutout

SEATTLE - Off the opening kickoff in the second half, senior co-captain Ben Fisk drilled a long pass to fellow senior Abdul Aman who netted the game-winner from the 18 yard line. The Huskies would get a second goal exactly 30 minutes later to seal the 2-0 victory over Seattle U in game three of the Husky Soccer Classic.
After two tough weeks on the road and a heartbreaking loss to Brown on Friday, Jamie Clark's UW men's soccer got a much-needed win to improve to 5-3-1 on the season and pickup its fourth shutout of the season.
"It was great to come out and get the win, and prove that we are the top team in Seattle," Fisk said. "It feels really good, especially after Friday's game. All the guys were gutted so it was good to come out and get back on the right track before conference play starts."
The Redhawks, who defeated Portland 4-3 on Friday, fall to 2-5 on the year.
The quick goal 10 seconds into the second half was the second of the season for Aman (Seattle, Wash.) on the assist from Fisk (Federal Way, Wash.).
Dylan Tucker-Gangnes, a senior from Bainbridge Island, Wash., gave the UW a 2-0 advantage in the 75th minute with his seventh goal of the season a team-high. He scored off a free kick from the left side of the field, just inside midfield.
"In the second half we were opportunistic, first of all, but we put ourselves in good positions, and that was the difference," Clark said of his team. "We came out with the enthusiasm to win a game as opposed to the first half which was really sluggish."
Washington took 18 total shots, six on goal while Seattle earned nine shots, just one on goal which was saved by Husky junior Spencer Richey. The Seattle, Wash., native picked up his fourth shutout in goal this season.
Fisk along with freshman James Moberg and senior Quinton Beasley each took three shots in the game.
Six minutes into the game the Huskies took three quick shots but one was blocked and two were saved by SU keeper Shane Haworth. Throughout the game the Huskies put the pressure on the Redhawks by continuously pounding the ball in the box in front of the goal. Multiple shots were blocked by the Seattle U defense.
The lone shot on goal for the Redhawks was a soft header in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Brown was named the tournament champion with a perfect 2-0 record. The Huskies were second at 1-1 followed by Seattle U (1-1) and Portland (0-2). Thomas McNamara from Brown was the Offensive MVP while Dylan Tucker-Gangnes from Washington was the Defensive MVP.
Pac-12 play begins for the Huskies as they host Oregon State on Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
