UW Golf Ends Season With 4-1 Loss To Texas

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Washington dropped three matches and trailed in two other to fall 4-1 to Texas in the quarterfinals of match play at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships on Friday. Each team receieved half a point for unfinished matches.
The loss ends the season for the Huskies who failed to make it out of the first round of match play for the third time in three attempts.
"I'm disappointed, but I've had losses that hurt a lot worse," was how Husky Coach Matt Thurmond assessed the day. "That team just played awesome.
"I thought we played pretty well today. We did what we wanted to do, we didn't give them a lot of holes and make many mistakes. They just played amazing. I don't know even if we played our best today if we could have beat them.
"That's a very different feeling than if you blew it and knew you should have had it. Props to Texas for a great day."
Texas entered the NCAA Championships as the top-ranked team and definitely played like it on Friday. Washington led for a total of just two holes in all five matches during the day. Texas led in every match by the 11th hole and never looked back.
The Longhorns got on the scoreboard first with a 3&2 win in the first match between Charlie Hughes and Toni Hakula. The match was squared at 10, but Hakula went on to win the next two holes. He clinched the match with a birdie on the par-3 16th hole.
The second match completed was between Jordan Spieth, the nation's top-ranked player, and Ty Chambers. Chambers kept it square through three holes before Spieth ran off a string of birdies to take a lead he never would relinquish. Chambers held strong with a large following of Texas fans following his group, but Spieth clinched it on No. 15 when they both scored par.
Despite the daunting task that Chambers faced, he was up to the challenge from the get go.
"I was pretty happy when I heard I was playing Spieth," he said. "You have nothing to lose and everything to gain when you play the No. 1 player in the nation. You're the underdog and you can only fight when you are playing someone like that."
Washington conceded the match after Cheng-Tsung Pan and his opponent Dylan Frittelli both scored par on the 17th hole, giving Frittelli a 2&1 victory. Pan trailed by 3 holes after 11, but went on a mini-run to cut it to one hole by No. 13. On 14, he found the sand and made bogey while Frittelli scored par. Frittelli, the nation's 5th-ranked player, would extend his lead back to 3 on No. 15 and eventually close out the match on 17.
Trevor Simsby was trailing by 1 on the 18th-hole when word circulated that Texas had clinched the match. He shook hands with his opponent Cody Gribble and conceded the match at that point ending the day and the season for the Huskies.
Chris Williams trailed by two at the same moment. He was paired with Julio Vegas and held a brief lead after 2 holes before Vegas tied him on No. 3 and took the lead for good on No. 4.
"I three putted three and he birdied No. 4, and all of the sudden I was one down," said Williams. "It's so hard to make up shots out here, especially against a player like him.
"He made a lot of pars and I made bogeys; I just couldn't get anything going."
Vegas led by as much as three holes before Williams made a late rally. They were on the 16th fairway when word came of the end of the match.
The season may end for the Huskies on Friday, but Thurmond and his team held their heads high. It was a great season for the team and a majority of the team is slated to return next season. Williams and Hughes will be seniors, Simsby a junior and Pan just a sophomore.
